I was chillin' on Airport Blvd. at SJC right by the runway, and noticed that they moved the jet-blast wall way back so the runway is longer or somthing. What are they doing with the runways there, expanding? Will bigger planes come into SJC anytime soon?

I believe that the runways were extended about three or four years ago to accomodate the MD-11 and American's Asian flights. I remember there was a big flack about it at the time, with all the airport neighborhoods protesting, just like at O'hare.

I don't know of any further runway expansions although I'm sure it is possible.

I'm not sure on this, but the move could be in preparation for the closing of 30L and the shift to the new runway (30R) while 30L is extended.

What they are doing is expanding 30R/12L to 12,500 ft so it will be the same length as 30L/12R. The new runway is scheduled to open early June. When that happens, 30L will be closed for renovation. When that is completed, 30L will be used for arrivals and 30R will be used for departures.

If you go to http://www.sjia.org you can view the master plan for the airport.

Far as I know 30L is still 10200 ft. 30R might end up shorter than that, but I'm guessing it won't exceed 10200 ft anytime soon. But I haven't seen the report.
