NW & DL Flight Numbers?

I've noticed that some DL flt #s have become NW flt #s ... seems that outwardly it's DL, but flight numbers are becoming NW's? Guess that was part of the merger ...

In the transition period a few things have gone on.

1) NW flight numbers, operated by NW aircraft, on legacy DL routes. These are routes like LGA-RSW, LGA-NAS, etc. that are now being operated by NW A319/A320's

2) NW flight numbers, operated by DL aircraft. There are a handful of international routes that are on the NW reservations system, NW handles the revenue management, but operated by a DL aircaft. EWR-AMS is one of them, as well as JFK-NRT.

This is all in the interim until SOC occurs, and the reservations systems are combined. Then the NW code will go away and they will all be DL flights, operated by DL aircraft (of which may be on legacy NW routes and legacy NW aircraft).

The opposite is also occuring in limited instances. I recently traveled on DL801/800 ATL-NRT, and the flight is managed by the Delta reservations system (NW codeshare) but is operated by NW crews and equipment. I was traveling on a buddy pass, and because of some limitations on DL's end (not NW's), I could only travel on DL flights (where DL was not a codeshare). As it turned out, the only flight that fit that category was ATL-NRT, which is operated by NW. Even JFK-NRT and PDX-NRT, which are operated by DL crews and equipment are actually DL codeshare flights. Very kooky! I imagine it will be a lot easier for everyone (employees and customers) when SOC is granted and all the flight numbers are consolidated to DL numbers.

Actually, probably not until May 2010 for complete schedule integration and a return to a more normal flight numbering system.
