Yesterday, DEC 6, 2009, Qatar Airways flew to Melbourne, Australia, its 84th destination world-wide using its brand new 777-200 LR. Anybody know what aircraft served the maiden route, and the load factors?

Flight left on schedule pretty good for a first flight I'd say! Especially with all the media and marketing people buzzing about!
The only real problem is that MEL infrastructure is really struggling with regard to passport control with so many flights going out at this time of the night now its rather pathetic.

Very true, but its a surprise.I was expecting SYD to be the one.MEL is actually a fantastic airport but as SO MANY airlines have come up...the airport is being pushed to its limits...other than this, its a nice airport.

Keep flying, because the sky is no limit!

I happened to be at the airport at the time (picking up the folks from EK flight from AKL...) so went up stairs to investgate. There were some media dudes around the place and what appeared to be some high ranking officials in suits. Also by the entrance to the airside area, there was this band of four men in Arabic clothing playing Arabic music with a billboard behind them ( i got the distinct impression these men were not Arabic however...)
I was hoping for a freebie give away (atleast a poster or a pen!) but no.

Get ready for MEL to get busier soon - it's Viva Macau's turn to land here later this week too.

Regarding the aircraft used, one of their new 772LR's(A7-BBC) was 'broken in' recently, flying to MAN twice in late November, maybe now being used on flights that it was designed for.

Regarding the aircraft used for the inaugural DOH-MEL, according to QF175 in the Australian Aviation Thread # 32 forum, it was their first 77L, A7-BBA.

I hope QR get together with DJ for an interline agreement in the near future so all Aussies can experience their reportedly '5*' service!

Don't hold your breath though. I've flown several carriers (predominently Middle Eastern ones), and Qatar Airways service is really nothing to write home about. It's good compared to some US and European carriers, but in my opinion has a long way to go before they match Etihad and Emirates.

In an interview today, Qatar Airways chief Akbar Al Baker identified Perth as the next possible destination in Australia and "warned Sydney that it was not certain to become the next local port to receive direct flights from Doha" - Source

It's about time QR tapped into the lucrative "Kangaroo route". I'm sure any flights down under will do well!

Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

If this 77L was "new" then it wasn't their first. They have been using the 77L to IAH for some time.

When in doubt, hold on to your altitude. No-one has ever collided with the sky.
