anyone know what airline ATC calls WATERSKI. My pilot friend and I were flying last week from MMU-RDG and we heard new york dept talk to someone with the callsign waterski coming into EWR. My friend says he has heard this name before so its gotta be someone with regular service. he just still doesn't know what it is. I've check backposts about this topic and none mention that particular code...anyone know who it is?

It might be LOT 763 or 762. They have regular service to EWR. As far as i know they have a lot of polish ATC's in EWR too.

Waterski belongs to Trans States Airlines...either TWA express or Us Airways express.

hey thanks guys for the responses. very much appreciated. after doing a little more research I found that it is indeed trans world express. Wasnt quite sure if it was, being that Ive never seen any TW aircraft with that labeling here in EWR. Guess they must use regular TW planes. So, thanks again guys......even YOU lain  Big grin

I heard the story somewhere that the origin for the codename "waterski" came as a result of a destination city in the early days of Trans States Airlines. I don't know where, but it was a vacation city where, you guessed it, waterskiing was a major attraction.

Before they were Trans States Airlines (trans world express out of STL and delta express in the northeast), they were Lodge of the Four Seasons Airlines flying from STL to Lake of the Ozarks - a resort in central Missouri. Hence the Waterski callsigns.

Ah, thanks Learpilot! That's the story I remember now. My co-worker at STL told me that. From St. Louis? Thanks again.

Right you are!
Also, FYI, Trans States is "in bed with:" Delta, Northwest, USAir, United, and TWA. Most J-41s are painted in TWexpress colors, but the "barbie jets" are being painted in Delta colors. I also believe that they may have recently lost NWA and USAir!? when they moved out of the west coast.
Happy flying  Smile

Trans States does not have a very good reputation (though there employees are really really good {go STL ramp!})

Right now their codeshares are with TWA LLC(American) and US Airways.

As with most jobs in the airline industry, Regional Airlines bid for work. Usually it's the rate at which their aircraft departs (fee per-departure or profit sharing with the major). TSA is concentrating on midwest operations (such as dropping west coast TWA, NWA, UA, AS, codeshare and TWA east coast feeders, picking up routes out of PIT and limiting flying on the east coast).

Rumors from the HR department is that much of the J41 operation is moving to STL and RJs are moving to PIT (due to American's scope-clause restrictions). TSA starts delivery of EMB-140s in November or December.

Much of the above is true...

Waterski is technically Trans States Airlines, which operates at Trans World Express out of STL and US Airways Express out of PIT and EWR.

Their J-41s out of PIT and EWR fly in house colors, their J-41s out of STL fly in TWE colors

Their RJs out of PIT will be painted into US Airways Express colors soon.

Their RJs out of STL will cease flying for TWA Airlines as TWE soon and be transferred to PIT as US Airways Express.

The airline has desposed of their J32 fleet, several of which now fly for TWE carrier Corporate Airlines.
