Actually it does, going to YYZ alone, I could've chosen other US carriers, if I include BUF as YYZ alternative, Airtran and Southwest offer much cheaper fares. I agree with the vote, for checked baggage allowance alone.

Nice airplanes but service is far from "fab." It's spotty at best. Perhaps it is good by North American standards but wouldn't past the test here in Asia.
Overall, though, I like the product for the price I pay. I put up with the bad service.

I think 'spotty' is a very accurate way to describe AC service. While it is on par with treatment I've received on some European carriers, it is far from the service levels I've experienced with Asian carriers.

I haven't flown on a US carrier for years so I have no comparison there.

They seem to set the service level right. No sense giving service that the Customer will not pay for. The North American Customer has said time and time again, that price alone is the biggest factor when choosing an airline.

What impresses me is that AC is able to capture a good mix of low yield price sensitive Customers with high yield business traffic. Those that pay the lowest fare for the outbound leg, as that will not change, but pay the highest Y fare for the return, as that may change.

When you have an airline that spans 5 continents, the service level varies by region. As you are aware, the Asian product is different than the North American one. (Which is also different than the South American and European product.) But it is the Asian product you mention is not the same as the Asian carriers.

That is entirely correct. But Air Canada is a business, and if it is maintaining high yields and high load factors on Asian flights, why give service that is not necessary.

Looking at the last 2 years, and the "Mayday" calls of sterling airlines like Singapour, Japan Air Lines and British Airways, you have to see the business is evolving. No longer can the high service levels in Y be subsidized by J and F passengers when that J and F passenger has all but disappeared.

I hate to say it, but it looks like the predictions are coming true, and when the price conscious passenger hits Asia in a big way, Customers there too will chose by price and not service.

AC is hit or miss. If you are lucky, you will have a "fab" experience. If you aren't so lucky, it's going to be a pain in the ass. That's what frustrates customers (and maybe why it's the airline canuks love to hate) - you are never sure which AC you're going to get. It does seem to be something AC is working on though, as it's gotten better the last couple years.

At any rate, good on them for the award.

Not so sure about that.

I flew with WS twice.

YHM-YYC, it was a good flight, on time, motivated crew.

Then I flew BGI-YYZ, it was a horrendous flight, terrible crew and just about every passenger was saying ... next time I am paying extra to fly AC!

There are lots of "I hate WS" stories around this neck of the woods, just like the "I hate AC" stories out west. I think it is inherent with airlines in general.

Good for the business travellers... too bad AC doesn't seem to treat their domestic passengers in the same manner.

I had another poor encounter with AC recently... the only good part was the fact AC actually did the right thing this time and refunded me a portion of my ticket for their incompetence.

I am stuck with them for YYC-YVR-YXS & the reverse in less than 2 weeks... I've already told my wife to pack things we need in carry on bags because the chance of our bags going missing is extremely high, considering it happens to me almost every time I fly with AC, especially in the winter.

So kudos to those high end customers... good to know AC treats you better than the rest of us 'cattle'.

Funny think about that line of thought.

After my "bad" flight with them, they sent me a survey and I answered it honestly, giving credit where it was due. The response I got was along the lines of "because you clearly have issues with Westjet, we will not acknowledge or consider your survey in our statistics!".

I had to chuckle therefore when their latest ads say the majority of people that fly Westjet, prefer Westjet. I guess my survey didn't get included because it contained information they didn't like.

I have been on 12 AC flights the past year between yyc and YYZ on erjs, a320/a321....all 12 flights had superb and friendly service. I have been on 4 westjet flights between yyc and YYZ and all were uncomfortable and service was just ok. Friends and family had the same experiences. I would pay extra to fly AC any day.

Oh, they're fine. They have nice planes, good in flight sevice, etc. If everything goes according to plan, everything's great. The problem comes when things do go right, such as missed connections, customer service. Booking, re-booking, etc. That's where the complaint comes from.

Hmm, I missed that point, but I don't necessarily called it "GOOD SERVICE". It's on par with Virgin America IMHO.

I'll respectfully disagree here. "Service" is for the most part, free to provide and usually acts as the tiebreaker between similar or otherwise identical products. One doesn't have to offer FF points, lounge access, big seats, hot meals, free booze or metal cutlery to provide a high standard of service. Where AC can improve is in its level of consistent, high-quality passenger attention, which means that every employee does his/her job without complaint, bad days and dirty laundry (we all have 'em) are kept behind the scenes, and when the inevitable snags and delays occur, the individual customer is treated promptly with respect and fairness. This treatment may not necessarily include automatic accommodation or free upgrades, yet still leave the customer satisfied. AC's track record of reacting poorly when the wheels come off the tracks is less than desirable. I do see a sniff of optimism lately - it'll be interesting to see what happens during the next snafu snowstorm.

Although not without its own company warts, WestJet has managed to shine when the chips are down - whether or not they always deserve the accolades. They still give most casual observers the impression of a local 'aw shucks' underdog airline, which is pretty distant from the truth these days.

A sample size of two flights? I wonder how your honest opinion may change after even a modest half-dozen flights with each carrier (and no, sitting in the cockpit does not count). I've had great flights with both airlines, inconveniences with both, and could make suggestions for improvement to both Sean and Calin. I've flown each carrier extensively throughout their respective networks, ie: more than twice. WS is certainly more consistent in terms of product offered, but AC still offers me the best value for my personal air travel requirements, and remains my first choice between the two.

And having just returned from a couple transcontinental flights with a large US carrier, I'll reiterate how fortunate we are in Canada to have these two airlines.



The nice thing about a mistake is the pleasure it gives others.

That would include, of course, the UM allowed to deplane at YUL with a complete stranger. That would include, of course, the mess made in the conversion to Sabre, the dropped calls at the call centre, the inability of the staff (at times) to retreive modified PNRs.

I fly WS from time to time, and they produce a decent Greyhound-like product. But now they're at what, 8,000 employees ? It's no longer an aw-shucks outfit, and I disagree they give that impression. They are starting to behave more like legacy carriers.



Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Agreed - it's not a 'lil-ol-me' organization any longer...that disappeared a decade and several thousand employees ago. But they certainly continue to play off that impression to thousands of people west of Thunder Bay (and why not - it works); even the media tends to offer a lot gentler reporting when headaches occur at the teal gates.

I agree. AC faces competition with what I would consider to the best in the business with regard to service, like CX, JL and BA. However when looking at statistics, it appears AC is holding its own competing.

I just saw that AC is maintaining a 94% full revenue J-class load factor on YYZ-HKG and YVR-HKG alone!
