True, and looking at the LAX TAF (121309Z), the winds are forecast to remain from the east at least until 0100Z, so, my guess is that it would be easier as the day progresses just to remain in an east flow; I dont know what it entails for LAX to switch the airport around once the day is really in full swing...

Since the majority of traffic comes from the east, it's easier to just draw a line and have everyone after that line land east. There would be a little holding from the western arrivals, but there's generally not that much traffic, plus plenty of alternates in that area to not pose an issue.
