Quoting 71Zulu (Reply 1): That is the certificate number for NW but never seen a number displayed like that so don't know.
Trying to remove the phrase "Northwest Airlines" from the heads of passengers, while still meeting the legal requirements?

Quoting Flyibaby (Reply 2): Won't matter in a couple of months anyway with the combined operating certificate.

Quoting MAH4546 (Reply 7): The law requires that the passengers know it is a Northwest-operated flight.
- Not a stretch from "Delta Connection Operated by Skywest Airlines," US Air Express Operated by Chautauqua Airlines" or "Northwest Express Operated by Pinnacle Airlines." Just a way to notify passengers.

If you were passenger Joe Blow, would you know that NWAA301A means Northwest Airlines? I already stated I know it's a legal requirements, I was trying to figure out the cryptic name, rather than "Northwest Airlines"

From the actual FAR 14 CFR Part 119.9
Use of business names.
(a) A certificate holder under this part may not operate an aircraft under part 121 or part 135 of this chapter using a business name other than a business name appearing in the certificate holder's operations specifications.
(b) No person may operate an aircraft under part 121 or part 135 of this chapter, unless the name of the certificate holder who is operating the aircraft, or the air carrier or operating certificate number of the certificate holder who is operating the aircraft, is legibly displayed on the aircraft and is clearly visible and readable from the outside of the aircraft to a person standing on the ground at any time except during flight time. The means of displaying the name on the aircraft and its readability must be acceptable to the Administrator.
Paragraph (b) states it can be the name or the certificate number. In this case, they decided to use the cert. number. However, after the single operating certificate, these will be removed on all DL painted aircraft. The remaining DC-9-30s and 40s (remaining in NW colors) will actually then need a sticker stating "operated by Delta Airlines" or with DL's certificate number DALA026A similar to shown here or if they get a new number altogether with the single certificate.

35 years of American Trans Air/ATA Airlines, 1973-2008. A great little airline that will not be soon forgotten.

I noticed the same thing when boarding an A319 yesterday. If I had to guess, they're moving towards these stickers instead of the larger "Operated by Northwest Airlines Inc." stickers in preparation for SOC day. That way, all they have to do is peel the sticker off while standing in the jetway of whatever city the aircraft is parked in on December 31, and they're good to go.

Quoting NWAESC (Reply 10): In addition, on the DC9's (not sure of other fleet types) just below the door sill, there are now black "plus signs" on a white and yellow background.
Those are jetway alignment placards........kinda like a "target" for the jetway driver. There is a black mark on the bumper of the jetway also. In theory, all you have to do is align both marks.

i would say so. As said ab above, the FAR will let them put the cert number on it.
