The day is here!

Please use this thread to discuss the events leading up to the first flight scheduled for later today. The crew will be creating 3 'super threads' as follows:

Official 787 pre-first flight super thread (this thread, which will be archived when the flight happens)

Official 787 lift-off and flight super thread (will be archived the day following the first flight)

Official 787 post (as in after) first flight super thread (ongoing discussion related to the first flight)

We will remain open to other 787-related threads which may discuss other aspects of the aircraft including testing and entry into service.

Please use moderators@airliners.net to contact us.

My own event is I can't stop looking at the firstflightnewairplane web page set up by Boeing.

This is going to be such an awesome aircraft. I am already a big fan. I want to be on the beautiful B-787's first commercial flight. She will look awesome wearing the ANA colours!

I hope nothing - i mean nothing - will disrupt the plans of having the first flight this evening at Payne field under the eyes of Concorde G-BOAB.

Granted I have very limited knowledge in this area but I believe PAE is class C airspace and the VFR visibility is 3sm with 500' below, 1,000' above and 2,000' horizontal of the clouds. Min 1,000' Ceilings (?) and for the class B around the area it's 3sm visibility and clear of clouds. they could very well find a hole and go VFR on top too.

I'm selfishly hoping for a first flight on the 16th, might make a nice bday present.

Forecast is for an overcast layer, so no real chance for a hole there. Besides, do you really want to be hunting for a hole at low altitude in a jet on its first flight?

Definitely doesn't look promising..

Am I the only one that's getting the feeling that the PR and marketing department announced this without actually consulting the Flight test dept.? I have no doubt they will be on an IFR FP but if the FF calls for VMC this is definitely a no-go.. Which IMHO itself would be quite embarrassing.. On the other hand, they could probably scrap the test program for this flight and do a positioning flight just to have done the first flight.

I want to see this bird in the air as much as the next guy, but I'd rather see it fly instead of watching it disappear into the clouds.. I'd rather have them wait for some nice weather on Thu/Fri and let the bird take to a blue sky with sun shining..

But I'm keeping my fingers crossed..

I love the smell of Jet-A1 in the morning...

It certainly is a modern marvel but I wouldn't go as far as calling it "revolutionary." It's really more of an evolution of the same concept used for decades. The BWB, Concorde, and maybe even the Boeing sonic cruiser could be considered more revolutionary in terms of design, application and changing the way we travel.

In fairness, Boeing have always made it clear that the first flight date is very much 'weather permitting.'

The forecast (as far as you can rely on 'forecasts' for the volatile Pacific Northwest) is for temperature OK (about 40F), winds OK (no more than 10-15 knots), precipitation probably OK (early showers easing). If that all turns out to be 'kosher' the deciding factors look like being visibility/cloudbase.

Test pilots are a tough and capable breed. I'd say that the odds are about 50/50 at present, maybe even as good as 60/40. They'll certainly 'go' if they get any sort of reasonable fine weather 'window.'
