Surfing around the web, I came across a photo of an Ozark Airlines 727 on the www.ozarkairlines.com webpage. I was unaware that Ozark flew this aircraft, and there are no photos in the airliners.net database. Does anyone know the numbers of a/c operated, routes, and dates? Was this an aircraft that never flew? Thanks for the info.

Actually, the two 727-2D4s were built in 1979. If I remember the story I read, OZ ordered three 727s. By the time they were near delivery, fuel prices had shot up and OZ was trying to cut costs. The two completed a/c immediately went to PA and the third was cancelled.
Douglas was also trying hard to keep one of its loyal customers. OZ finally ordered the MD-80 and recieved four of them prior to the TWA merger.
The two -2D4s that were built are now making nightly visits to MEM. (N287/288FE)

You messages on this subject rang a bell, as I seem to recall having seen the aircraft in service with Ozark. I was working in that part of the US in 1980, and went through STL a number of times, which is where I remember seeing them. (When you used to sit on an Ozark flight out on one of the dreaded J-dock gates waiting for a mobile lounge to get there, one had plenty of time to look out the window.)
I checked Bill Harms' websites, and the 2 727s involved show up as 727-2D4, D4 being Ozark's customer code. Harms also shows them being delivered in October of 1979, so the timing could work. I know some folks from the original Ozark/Krazo, so I'll ask them what they remember, and if they have any pictures.
After PA had them, the 2 aircraft ended up at Fedex converted as freighters, and are currently flying as N287FE and N288FE, respectively.
Spoke to a buddy of mind who dispatched there at the time, and his recollection is that the one of the Ozark 727s did operate a charter or two in the very short time that they were there, but they never went into *scheduled* service. Maybe that's why I can't shake the thought of having seen one during one of my many trips through STL around that timeframe.
My buddy is checking arount to see if other phots (and info on OZ 727 flights operated) exists. If so, I'll post back, and/or upload them to the database..

According to "Jet Airliner Production List Vol 2", N720ZK was delivered to Ozark on Oct 11 1979 and then sold to Pan Am on Oct 23, 1979. N721ZL was delivered to Ozark a few days later on Oct 25 1979 and sold to Pan Am the same day.
