So the 2 unnamed destinations in Europe are revealed. CPH and BCN .. pretty good move I say.

CPH will be 4 weekly services and BCN will be daily.

Great news for BCN. QR will be the first of the big Middle Eastern carriers (EK, EY,...) to serve BCN.

I was hoping for CPH! But, the BCN flight would be via MAD or will be nonstop?

That is an excellent move from QR given the fact that EK still has their route to CPH on freeze. BCN is a pretty obvious move, because of it being the capital of Catalonia in spain and being a major city. CPH because of it being the capital of scandinavia, eventhough QR already operates to ARN, CPH is the smarter move

For geographical reasons, It would make more sense to fly DOH-BCN-MAD-BCN-DOG than
DOH-MAD-BCN-MAD-DOH. Maybe a triangular routing will leave everybody happy (or unhappy): DOH-MAD-BCN-DOH or the other way around.

I hope it's a non-stop to BCN - it's a great city and it seemed to have a lot of folks from the subcontinent there...

Great news especially for Copenhagen! I think they are being smarter here, by getting into Scandinavia before Emirates.

...I also thought that Stockholm was the capital of Scandinavia, or at least that is what they say, and that Copenhagen was the capital of cafes or something like that.  Smile

I remember that EK planned to fly DXB-CPH back in 2006, but then religion and business got entangled and they ditched the plans.

Good to see that Qatar has come to their senses!

ARN has been a success for QR and they have now been upgraded to A330, QR are shifting the A319 to CPH.

Being a financially more important market in a larger and more powerful country, Stockholm is the obvious first destination in Scandinavia.
Copenhagen might be a more fun city but thats another discussion.

Any idea of the times the flights will operate? I assume they will aternate early dep/midday from DOH to be able to connect to all destinations nicely at least 2 - 3 times a week..

BCN with an A330 is a bit risky, most other Europena destinations are 319/320

It could be so or BCN/MAD will share the flight (whatever combination) although by reading the press release you do not get that impression... We will see..

In any case both destinations BCN/CPH will be a great success as this is the first Middle Eastern Airline in those airports, this will make any Emirates disembark in Scandinavia or Spain even harder... and Ethihad even more remote..

I can't wait for a one-stop to BCN from SYD !!! so far the best time wise and all is SQ but the stop in MXP kills it..

BCN generates quite a bit of Pakistan/India ethnic traffic, so I could see PIA giving up ... time will tell, great news anyway.

QR already flies to MAD so I don't see the point in flying to BCN via MAD.

From what it says on its website it really looks like it will be a direct flight.

If they are not going for a nonstop to BCN, a triangular routing might very well be the best option, since they would not be allowed to pick up any local traffic on BCN-MAD anyway, so if they don't do a triangular routing, a lot of the seats will be empty on this leg. Does SQ pick up local traffic on MXP-BCN by the way? Should be possible, it's not domestic?

Hmmmm.... have to defend Copenhagen here  Smile Although, firstly, I fully agree that Copenhagen is more fun..! No doubt Stockholm is the financial capital of Scandinavia, and that justifies a lot of traffic, including long-haul - however, Stockholm is not bigger than Copenhagen, and CPH's catchment area, which includes a million+ people in Sweden is larger than ARN's. And as a business destionation in general, CPH is at least as interesting as ARN - also evident by a lot more nonstop long-haul to CPH than ARN. But as a financial destination, no doubt Stockholm is more important.. (But this is not to start this discussion in general in this thread..  Smile )

Happy new year, and very glad to see QR coming to CPH!!

Best regards,

Kevin777

Indeed. The sub-header in the press release, "Spanish Operations Double With Launch Of Daily Services To Barcelona", seems to indicate this will be non-stop.

I wonder why CPH isnt on an A330!! Seems like CPH is big enough to handle a widebody--especially since it will be the sole Arabian Gulf carrier there!

Does anyone know how many 777s QR will receive next year?

MAD is doing very good alone.....It has been upgrade along the years.....now is Daily and the planes are pretty full..........so I can´t see them adding BCN as a tag-on

BCN will be a good destinabion, actually is served by SQ via Milan and they are really happy, because they were talking to add a non-stop service to SIN.

They'll probably do the same as with ARN. Start with a 4x weekly 319, and then gradually increase both aircraft size and frequency

Is'nt ARN to become an A330 destination in 2010?

Since CPH only receives an A319 Stockholm still seems to be their focus destination in Scandinavia, which I think is right in terms of Stockholm being the most important financial destination. Stockholm is also as good as CPH for connections from the rest of the Nordic region (OSL, HEL etc.)

Any update on ORD? I've seen that this would happen soon, but it appears not to be.

25 AABB777 : I don't know the exact number, but from what I hear at a minimum QR will take delivery of a B777 monthly in 2010. Re: Chicago: ORD may be on the shor
26 Behramjee : YYZ has been on the list for a while but nothing has come about it due to no bilateral existing between Qatar and Canada. QR doesnt mind flying to YYZ
27 AirIndia : it will difficult to obtain rights wit Canada. Canada ensures protection to AC by granting limited rights. They are not increasing the bilaterals wit
28 SYDBCN : No times for the flights to BCN/CPH yet??? anyone know or can check?
29 Flyboy_se : BCN will be a separate flght from MAD. The schedule is in the progess, so will be posted in few days. regarding CPH, i am guess it will be 2 morning a
30 QatarA340 : QR recently recieved its 5th 77L. I wonder why Sydney is not announced yet? The same goes to AMS. I wonder if QR will jump the wagon and announce AMS.
31 SYDBCN : It is now about 2 months before the start of the flight and no times yet? the flight is not bookable yet in their website,,,, I would like to make a b
32 Ankaraflyjet : QR's latest European destination is "ESB" with 4 flights per week connecting Turkish capital Ankara with Doha. Flights to commence on Apil 5th 2010. Q
33 Flyboy_se : Most likely waiting Australian Government approval The route has only been announced recently, they are finalizing the details. I think the schedule
34 MillwallSean : I think QR are smart to move into Scandinavia. Scandinavia is a region with a lot going for it in terms of wealth and travel-habits. Its also lacking
35 Flyboy_se : So CPH schedule is : QR85 days 5 7 DOH CPH 0800-1345 QR86 days 5 7 CPH DOH 1620-2340 QR97 days 2 6 DOH CPH 0120-0705 QR98 days 2 6 CPH DOH 1205-1925 s
36 Behramjee : This should have been the schedule for all 4 days of the week as the flight would have connected ideally with all SE Asian cities + KHI + CMB in both
37 Ojas : And the ISC, especially India, LHE, ISB. The new 3rd daily flight to CMB will enable them connections to CPH for all the 4 flights. See the 85/86 run
