Hi all,

Just back from a Ryanair flight to Barajas and other than the usual tales to tell about a flight to that airport (delays, supposed broken equipment), I also wanted to inquire as to the status of a few planes I saw.

Basically I noticed 3 Iberia planes (looked like A319 or 320) which seem to be parked on one of the taxi ways. I noticed them because at least one of them had red tarp covering the engine inlets and had a green line along the length of the aircraft which look to be covering the windows.

I noticed some additional aircraft with the same green line (one seemed to be an MD-88 with one engine missing) but these were parked out of the way at a maintenance hanger.

Just wanted to know what is the status of these planes. Are they retired from the Iberia fleet or simply parked due to the recession? Just curious as they were quite visible and not hidden like the other planes I saw.

PS, which is the Iberia 747 that is parked at Barajas? I saw her parked with doors open/removed as we took off today and she still looks quite good, at least from far away

That 747 is EC-DIA, named "Tirso de Molina", which will be scrapped shortly. This is the last 747 to be scrapped in La Muñoza maintenance area.

Should be EC-FCB and EC-FDA, some of the oldest A320 in Iberia's fleet (msn 158 and 176), which were retired two months ago, with the end of the summer schedule. The oldest Iberia's A320 (7 frames, with the exception of EC-FDB, which is still flying) are now stored.

There's a picture of EC-FCB on the internet, being towed at the end of November with the green line along the aircraft you mention. Try a search on the internet and you will see it.

They are waiting for a new owner, as they don't fly with IB anymore.
