Evening everyone! About 3 weeks ago I finally got to take a trip down to SXM and I've gotta say if you haven't been you absolutely need to go there is nothing like it. Anyway while I was there I participated in being stupid and standing on Maho beach behind a multitude of different jets during their takeoff runs. Well to sum up what your going to see is me standing behind the daily Air France A340 and other than the fact that I'm possibly insane, a nice inpatient individual decided to take her life and mine (in this case) into her hands by driving her truck behind the jet and in front of me... And for the record I actually saw none of this because I was protecting my eyes. Enjoy! I'm sure you will all get quite a laugh out of this one!

I will be wearing a snorkel and mask when I go.
It's 737s, 747s and 380s. Not 737's, 747's and 380's. Learn to use the apostrophe for crying out loud.

And we call them hairdryers.. Haha. I guess I appreciate jetblast a bit more now and wouldn't want to risk my equipment (whatever I have when I eventually get there) behind a jet like that!
Quoting AFGMEL (Reply 1): Definitely. Why not? Beats taking drugs and ruining your life.
Haha, as long as you have sufficient hearing protection I'd say. Permanent hearing damage could be just as bad as side effects..

Eh I've still got the warranty on my iPhone so that can be replaced! haha. And for the hearing thing thankfully I was smart enough to remember my plugs but I was more worried about my eyes than anything! I looked like a skinless lobster afterwords though... lol

A friend of mine who worked in airport ops at a large south Florida airport told me what he and friends would do on Friday nights. They'd dress up in pads and crouch into the fetal position and lie by the approach lights (airside) and roll around with the jet blast.

Reminds me of the Mythbusters' Super-Sized Myth special where they drove a car, school bus, and a Cessna behind a K4 747. All three, including the school bus, caught air.

Thanks for the memories. Its been over a year since I went to SXM and I have no idea when I might be able to go again. I can still smell the jet exhaust and feel its warmth, I also remember having to wash sand off of EVERY part of me afterwords, even after something as "small" as a B6 A320. Good times!! Glad you didn't get nailed by any flying objects.
Give me a mile of road and I can take you a mile. Give me a mile of runway and I can show you the world.

Quoting SJC4Me (Reply 17): I understand covering your eyes, but why did you cover the camera lens? We can't see anything for the last 10 seconds of the video.
Have you ever seen the effects of sand vs lenses? Yeah...that never ends well.

That and the blast itself is so intense it sends you to the ground I was doing everything I could just to stay in place and hang onto my camera.
