I just read this article in Autopia about Spruce Creek, a big fly-in community in Florida, and it sounds like a pretty cool place to be. How common are these places? Are any of them connected to runways with commercial service?

There's quite a few of them around...I did the "mop up" instruction for my PPL at one of these fields (Cielo Dorado Estates, FAA ID: TA50). My instructor moved there...

Almost every large city in the US has some - in some cases as many as a dozen. There are also several located away from cities at areas with some tourist or scenic interest. Like some in the Florida Keys or the mountain top airport in North Carolina - Mountain Air - 2NC0 - http://www.airnav.com/airport/2nc0.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 has a pretty nice depiction of one community near Seattle.

Spruce Creek Fly In is very nice. I've been there but not to the Fly In part. They are also on a golf course. John Travolta used to have a place there, now he is in Ocala.

That would be Jumbolair. If you pull it up on Google Earth, you can actually see the 707 parked next to his house.

In Texas, we just park 'em out back and take off on the highway.  Big grin

I had some friends growing up that lived there, very cool place! One of their dads was a pilot for NW at the time, which was interesting to me, since there was NW presense at ELP.
