I just got a flight alert from flightaware that a United Airlines 747 has filed a flight plan from SFO-SAN as UAL901, now when i look the info up I don't see any information for this, UAL901 is headed out internationally, so i'm wondering if this is a mistake or some kind of charter flight, because my flight will be getting in around 7pm tonight (i'm on DL1045 right now) so I might hang out if a 744 is coming in.

Its probably just a flight aware glitch UA 901 is FRA-SFO-SAN, FRA-SFO is a 744 and SFO-SAN is scheduled as an A319.

It's a flight aware glitch...UA 901 if FRA to SFO on a 747 and then theie is an aircraft change SFO - SAN but still flight 901...
Just my 0.02
The opinions I post are of mine and mine alone, not of the airline I work for.

Thanks!
I've flown in/out of SAN quite a bit, and while I see that the runway should be big enough, it seemed like a 744 would be a bit of a squeeze...

As mentioned SAN does get 747 and can handle them. At the end of Rwy 13 there is a different taxi line to the runway marked for a 747. Zooming in on google maps you should be able to see it, and it is also noticeable if you are on the left side of the plane.

Quoting N1120A (Reply 9): The 744 didn't go non-stop to LHR and thus didn't really suffer weight issues. Flying to PHX is hardly a long trip.
you're right i forget about that, i was thinking going direct is when we get the weight penalties which is why we don't have too many direct international flights

UA does get creative with substitutions, but last week, the last 747 that did not receive the new interior was retired. In its last few weeks though, it was flying between the hubs and also to Hawaii to pick up slack to cover for any planes that might have canceled.
UA is good at using larger planes out of its hubs if necessary to cover for cancellations. SFO-LAX commonly will get 767s to help cover or the occasional P.S. 757 which takes the place of a similar in capacity A319. You never know what you will get, but a lot of effort is spent to cover the revenue passengers within the hubs. There has been more emphasis put on flexibility within the last year to allow for this.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

BA wanted San Diego to guarantee the cargo they had to leave behind, and San Diego wouldn't. Hence BA pulled the flight.

That would be at the end of 27. 13-31 is now taxiway Delta.

At the end BA did fly direct to LGW and then LHR with the 777. Zoom had direct flights to LGW and was planning on increasing frequency when they ceased operations.
