Within the last year UPS has started using the MD-11 on a lot of shorter haul and/or smaller city markets. Some other examples are: Kansas City, Minneapolis, Dallas, Raleigh, Orlando, Chicago, Cleveland and others.

Yes for the time of day it is flying it's most likely doing a postal run. When I was at ONT we used to get planes in the morning with freight and then we would turn them right back around with mail. Then in the afternoon they'd come back in with mail and we would then turn it with Freight for MEM, IND, AFW and OAK.

Now with the 744Fs flying the longer routes it probably makes sense to use an MD-11F with its large payload, and an added bonus is you aren't putting on so many hours for new maintenance checks or spending a lot in fuel

WHAT UPS IS DOING IS THERE PUTTING MORE MD-11'S IN DOMESTIC ROUTES AND REPLACING THEM WITH THE 744F AND 767F IN THE ASIA NETWORK. UPS HAS ALSO CUT BACK FLIGHTS INTO PHL AND RFD THIS YEAR CAUSING VOLUME TO JUMP FOR SOME GATEWAYS THAT WOULD FLY IN TO PHL RFD THAT NOW HAVE TO SEND THAT VOLUME IN TO SDF WHICH COULD CAUSE AN UPGRADE LIKE IN MKE TO AN MD-11.
