Widebody Deliveries In 2009

Airbus and Boeing delivered 205 widebodies between them in 2009.

That compares with…

2008 : 182
2007 : 197
2006 : 186

I haven’t checked back beyond 2006 but I’m guessing that 205 is a record. That’s interesting given the prophesies at the start of the year.

The 205 comprised:

777 : 88
A330 : 76
767 : 13
A340 : 10
A380 : 10
747 : 8

In terms of engines ( )…

115 had GE (56%)
76 had RR (37%)
10 had PW (5%)
4 had EA (2%)

GE delivered…
168 x GE90 (777)
70 x CF6 (747, 767, A330)
TOTAL : 238

RR delivered…
112 x Trent 700 (A330)
40 x Trent 500 (A340)
24 x Trent 900 (A380)
8 x Trent 800 (777)
TOTAL : 184

PW delivered…
28 x PW4000 (747, A330)

EA delivered…
16 x GP7000 (A380)

Over the four years 2006-2009…

Boeing delivered 396 widebodies (51% of the total) and Airbus delivered 374 (49%).
Boeing outdelivered Airbus in 2007 and 2009.
Airbus outdelivered Boeing in 2006 and 2008.
GE delivered 946 engines on widebodies (52%)
RR delivered 612 engines (34%)
PW delivered 188 engines (10%)
EA delivered 32 engines (2%)
CFM delivered 28 engines (2%)

A&B between them sold 148 widebodies in 2009. (There were also cancellations of orders placed in previous years but 148 new planes were sold.)

Of these,
54 will have RR
39 will have GE
6 will have PW
4 will have EA
and 45 have not yet chosen an engine.

In terms of engines,
RR = 110 (49% of known sales)
GE = 88 (39%)
EA = 16 (7%)
PW = 12 (5%)

There are 90 engines left to fight over.

Best-selling engines?

Trent XWB = 54
GE90 = 50
Trent 700 = 40 (with 32 from China Eastern looking a good bet to give them 72)

If 330s are 8.5 / month and RR have 70% market share recently and 777 are only 7 per till may then 5 per month it will be very close, great if we see the pride off English engineering top of the pops  crossfingers

Do you know what? It just might!

Anyhow, you'll be happy to know that the Trent 700 has outsold the GE90 over the past three years by 530 to 436 and if China Eastern confirm RR for their December order for 16 A330s the difference will be 562 to 436.

While it will be close, that is a very interesting thought!

It is a shame that A380 production is so low. That would accelerate engine sales tremendously. At least put EA on the map.  spin

I missed the announcement of the final 777 production rate. What is the sum per year? (e.g., 5*10, 5*11? ) Thanks in advance.

While exciting, I'm certain that GE, due to their 77W exclusive has much higher margins than the T700. For every A330 order, GE and Pratt are keeping RR having to offer that little bit more aggressive offer.

I'm sure this is true. But with RR now outselling GE and PW combined on the A330, how do economies of scale play in all this? RR have now sold 1,000+ Trent 700s. Does that mean they can produce them more cheaply?

About the same time as RR had less than 5% of the civil market. Amazing how things change.

But then they can - and probably will - change again. I think PW will be back. Not soon, but they will.

The point can be made that PW has just shifted their market a bit. After all, they do produce the greatest turboprop engine of all time in the PT6 - an engine that flies on several types with several variations.

So, as they've dropped off a bit with widebodies, and may be back in the future, it's not like they're struggling all that much now.  Smile
