I was under the impression that NBT does some back up work from time to time as required , although for day to day purposes it is indeed withdrawn from scheduling .

So how many active B 747-400s? Will NBT become active again? Why not place it on AKL-HKG-LHR?

My understanding is that one of the reasons NBT has been demoted to a 'spare' is that it does not have very many hours left before an expensive check would be due . It is unlikely that NZ would ever recoup in service the cost of that heavy check .

Currently I dont think NZ have sufficient demand to operate a daily 777-200ER IIANM they are operating 5 x weekly on this route , so why would they put on a larger more expensive aircraft than one which they currently cannot fill at a satisfactory level of return ?

Well for now there's not much point in dropping it.. The 772 remains the better aircraft to use on this route but things could change when the 77Ws arrive.

It's all about the destination AND the journey.
