I'm sure smoke detecters have detected smoke many times, but until recently everyone assumed a smoker to be the reason and not some kind of attack.

Many years ago I was reading in the middle of the night on a flight to Bangkok when I saw a man searching for something he had lost under his seat: the guy used matches to get light. I told him to stop that nonsense. I have no idea how dangerous that actually was, but I'm sure people (myself included) would be less relaxed nowadays if someone messed around with lighted matches under a seat...
