Why Did US Get Rid Of Attache Magazine?

This topic is one of the things that I never understood about the HP/US merger. I honestly love Attache, I thought it was one of the best in-flight magazines out there. Then, the merger came along and they replaced Attache with US Airways Magazine, which to me seems very, very cheap.

I wonder:why would they get rid of the magazine? Was it too fancy for the new LCC that US became?

It was part of the whole rebranding of US into a LCC. Attache was very business-oriented and really fit the profile of what US Airways was in the 1990s - a business traveller airline.

With the America West merger and the subsequent focus on being a LCC, they wanted to water the magazine down a bit to attract more casual readers rather than just being about business topics.

Must say it was a shame, as Attache was one of the better reads out there - normally a good few articles in there each month. Sadly, US Airways Magazine is more about shorter, less intensive articles and nowhere near as good of a read.

Shame, the current one is almost all advertisments, and they have nothing similar to UA's 3PDs.

And I believe that US is still a biz-traveller airline.

Depends on where you look.

Part of the issue with US is that they have a very split personality still. The former East operation still caters to business travel quite a bit. The former West operation tends to face Southwest a bit more. Before the merger, there was no question that US was a biz airline, however, the folks in Tempe have been watering that down continuously (or at least trying to) over the past 3-4 years. They recanted on some of their incredibly stupid moves (no elite bonuses, charging for all drinks, etc.) but those moves have cost them some business to this day.

They don't charge for beverages any more and what do you mean by elite bonuses.

And also, it depends on where you live, too. And you have too consider US flies a lot of P2P routes in the Northeast.

ex...ALB-BUF, ALB-BOS, ALB-LGA, ROC-BDL

Attache was always a great read. The new US Airways Magazine is awful, and is nearly 75% advertisements.

The "award winning" Attache was awesome. US Airways Magazine not so much.

This is yet another part of US Airways "product" that their management arrogantly decided they could do without. Arrogance that has seldom been more misplaced.

I loved how in the begining after the CEO letter was this section where pax would share there comments, concerns , and complaints to the airline. I remember the CEO letter being very long too, longer than the ones today, with the font being small.

As I said...they recanted on them. Recanted means they don't do that anymore.

As for elite bonuses, about 18 months ago US Airways announced that elites wouldn't get bonus miles (a Silver got 25% bonus miles, Golds 50%, Plats 75%, Chairmen's 100% for each mile they flew). No other airline was stupid enough to anger their top travelers like that, and a lot of business travelers left US Airways because of this (and other reasons, such as reducing F on some planes like the A321s and 757s, etc.). A lot of those disenfranchised elites have remained away to this day and are now flying AA, UA, CO and DL instead.
