History Of The Autopilot

I have a question for anyone in the know...when did autopilots begin to appear on airliners? I've never heard an autopilot and a 707 or DC-8 talked about in the same sentence, but it would seem likely to me that early jetliners would have had them. So, for anyone who knows, when did they appear, and on which aircraft?

Crude autopilots were introduced during, maybe even shortly before the second world war.
These did not much more than provide direction and attitude hold, so needed a lot more monitoring (no correction for winddrift, no autonavigation, etc.).
