From what I can find on line, the decision on TAM to join Star Alliance was announced on or about Oct 6th 2008 and would take 12 to 18 months. So they stll have a few months to meet the far end of that commitment, but, what takes so long? UA is to be the mentor airline, one of Star's founders, so one would think they as well as LH would know the ropes. CO was announced after TAM and joined before.
Did the urgency of CO slow TAM? Or what?
I flew JJ from LHR to GIG in August 09, and after 2 attempts to get the miles on Milage Plus I still have yet to get UA to register them. At each attempt they need more informaton. I have sent boarding passes that show my MP number and ticket number- now they want proof of payment????? They seem determined to not add those miles.
So what is taking so long to get them into Star? How long is VARIG gone now?

TAM had to upgrade their IT systems in order to be able to join the Star Alliance (JJ's IT sucked big time, i know from personal experience). They chose to migrate to Amadeus which slowed things down a bit. The migration finally happened in January and now they are on pace to officially join Star in April.

VC10er, i believe the long time is due to the fact JJ was not on another airline, like CO, and used systems which were not compatible with the ones Star requires. They had to change their entire reservation system, update many and many lines of systems, equipments and manuals. CO in the other hand, was already a member of another alliance and in my view, despite adjustments, already had the standards required.

You can wait for JJ on Star by April with a premium... a GIG-FRA non-stop flight.

What about a GIG/FRA flight? A replacement to to RG777 flight? I LOVED that non-stop flight on VARIG! Are JJ bringing it back? Will they use one of their 777's? Will the 777 have a Frist Class cabin with suite seats vs the C seat with F service, that was a bummer!
I just can't wait any longer, it's driving me maluco not to have Star in Brasil.
How many 777's do JJ have now?
If true, I'm booking a flight now so I can be in my happy seat on a 777 from FRA to GIG asap.
And tudo bem Lipe! I still hope we can get that chopp one day!
(Lipe, are there pics of JJ's F seat on line?

This was announced as a new route between Rio and Europe, but considering Star and the need of a flight from Rio to a star Hub... GIG-FRA is the choice. Rumors i heard but i can't confirm or mention source at this time, say that it was also a request from LH.

Sorry but for sure will be with A332 with 3 classes (F/C/Y).

4, but they are looking to extend LHR-GRU to GIG. They asked this to ANAC, not yet decided.

Hmmm let me see...

Are those pics a first class seat on an A330 and 777? They look comfy.
When are the other 777's join?

They are from PT-MUA, the first 77W to receive the F seats.

IIRC TAM will receive 4 77W in 2012 and 2 more in 2013.

Been there, done that... I just gave up after several attempts.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

I tried that as well... a number of TAM flights where I provided my MP number at check-in, it was clearly printed on those (odd) Brazilian boarding passes, but mileage never showed up on my MP account. I wrote, called, sent in copies of boarding passes and e-tickets but NADA.... I finally gave up...
A far cry from getting credit on my AF Flying Blue account when flying GOL... One flight (SDU-CGH) was credited within 48 hours after having flown it and the second (GRU-MVD) wasn't credited but sent in proof of boarding pass and e-ticket and the mileage for that flight was credited within 10 days.... And GOL isn't even in Skyteam... yet (?)...

I give my Mileage Plus card all the time I fly TAM. In less than 50% of the cases the miles actually show up in my account. But what are the other options if flying in Brasil? I don't like GOL or Varig and TAM is a very good airline. And sometimes you do get your miles so for me it is still the best option available. Gotta try Azul sometime when flying to Campinas though......

There's still a long way to go before all the alliances deserve a star...
