Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows if United has route expansion plans at LAX. Thanks!

sorry, i really don´t know.
however, i think it could be possible that UA might introduce a flight to FRA in the next couple of years.
LH has transferred its 2nd daily to MUC but still, there should be some demand for a 2nd daily from FRA, and afaik, there´s no other airlines serving this sector...

UA does serve CDG and LHR from LAX, doesn´t it?

UA is in a very uncertain position about LAX. They have tremendous pressure to cut losses there and feed almost all of their transpac traffic through SFO (where they are committed to the market), but can't seem to be able to commit to that course of action. There are also other variables involved such as Sh*ttle, Skywest, etc...

Don't expect any major ADDITIONS by UAL at LAX soon, but don't be too surprised if major cuts start showing up in the next year or so.

How do you know that United is losing money at LAX? I fly United out of LAX all the time, and judging by the loads on the flights, I would disagree.

Why would they want to feed all trans-Pac traffic through SFO??? LA has the largest total Asian market outside of Asia!

That seems pretty odd considering United only gave LAX hub status what two or three years ago? Does this mean they're going to axe all trans-pacific flights including Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland? Wow, that stinks.....

I once read they had plans to make LAX their Latin American hub but lost out on routes to Brazil and Argentina so I wonder what's going to happen with that plan......though I think that it would make sense to make LAX a Latin American hub.

Not long ago, after UA launched the new SFO-MXP for 2002, UA's international development president said FRA would be the next international destination at LAX. He said they would have to consider the economic benefits on the route. If they should give an ok expect to see it open in Spring 2002.

When is the SFO-MXP route starting next year? I hope UAL tries a European expansion at LAX, we could use flights to Madrid, Copenhagen, Brussels, Rome, etc, but then again I'm just an aviation enthusiast, I don't know if these routes would make money......

MXP-SFO is already scheduled but not on official timetables yet. We have to wait for fall to come. LAX next european expansion will be FRA for sure. Rome and Amsterdam might be the next. These are rumors at the SFO UA managing center.

At LAX, it looks like UA has routes to the South Pacific (MEL, AKL, many codeshares on NZ), and at SFO it seem that UA has routes to the North Pacific (SEL, PVG, KIX, TPE) that the other do not have. Perhaps UA wants both hubs to focus on different parts of the Pacific, maybe?

Yeah it seems that United has a good South Pacific operation from LAX in conjunction with Air New Zealand. Hopefully it will expand....

Kartik, UA instead made MIA thier Latin American hub. It hasn't been the hugest hit, and they've cut back some routes, but they do have daily service to each of the Big Five (Caracas, Rio de Janiero, Sao Paulo, Santiago, and Buenos Aires). MIA makes a better Latin hub because there is much more O&D traffic, in addition to connecting.

UA does fly nonstop daily from LAX to GUA MEX and SAL. Foreign governments have succeeded in preventing United from flying LAX-GRU and LAX-SCL nonstop, much the the disappointment of UA.
Also, in terms of total UA & UAX flights, LAX is the third largest hub behind ORD and DEN.

This is the same reason why IAD ranked ahead of SFO in terms of total flights; despite only 115 or so mainline departures, there are a buttload of ACA flights!

The annual report is always a good resource for average yearly flight stats.

LAX has around 215 mainline flights per day, whereas SFO has around 230. SFO is a much larger station in terms of equipment though-- UA widebody heaven!

The reason why there isn't as much UEX at SFO is quite obvious: the runway situation discourages small plane ops at the moment.

SFO is United's cash cow. Did you know that it is the single largest revenue-producing station for the company? Yes, even larger than the mighty ORD. There are a great deal of Premier and above UALers here -- says something about the affluent Bay Area economy... notice how there are only 25 domestic mainline gates, and yet so much $$$ goes in and out of those jetways =). The gate utilization here is amazing!

That doesn't surprise me, UA practically controls SFO!I think I read somewhere that a substantial part of their revenue comes from the West Coast. LAX is different in that there is a much larger presence of other domestic airlines especially AA.....

SFO is UA's second largest hub but the number one in revenue for UAL. SFO is with LAX and JFK in the top 3 most requested cities in the Americas.

ORD: 572
DEN: 504
LAX: 378
IAD: 358
SFO: 331
