Hi there i was curious about the following. I am in thailand right now and my friend will visit me. She is at eham right now and have flight CI 066 that suppose to be air born at 14:25 amsterdam time. She just called me to say that the flight is delayed for 1 hour ( well that is what her was told). The reason of the delay was that the wing was hit by lightning while it was standing at the gate, and now it has to be repaired. So i was wondering how bad can it be. And what is it what there must be repaired, i mean what damage can lightning do to a wing? Or do they just check the wing?

I guess they mean checking, not repairing. There are a lot of sensitive sensors in/on a wing. Takes time to check them all out.

Well just heard that the flight is cancelled, they will leave saturday 6/2/2010 8:00 amsterdam time. So apparently there must be some damage, just wondering what it could be. Pffff CI has a few problems and delays/cancelations lately at AMS.

I was not aware of any lightning at AMS this morning/afternoon actually ... and I was at the airport actually at work.

Any idea what the damage could be? And will there be two flights tomorrow, or will they make from 2 flights 1( can't remember if they fly on saturdays to ams)?

The aircraft in question which will overnight at AMS now is B-18251.
And indeed, another CI B744 (B-18202) will come in tomorrow morning from BKK. So 2 flights will operate on Saturday.
I've no idea about the damage, and I can't find any trace of lightning this morning around AMS. Maybe it happened during approach or inflight towards AMS, resulting in neccesary maintenance checks on ground.

Yes i was wrong, it was hit during flight/approch, my fault. By damage must i think of holes in the fuselage or burn marks on metal? I know it is specullation, but what kind of damage could lightning do?

CI flies daily to AMS.
