Just in case you are interested, I have decided to post the link on here to show how much capacity DL and US are adding to their DAB schedule this week as the Daytona 500 is just days away. I also find it interesting to see how the capacity fluctuates during the weekend as the demand is less since most of the race fans are already in town.

http://www.flydaytonafirst.com/raceweekschedule.pdf

Take a look.

I don't remember there being this much frequency when I was going to school just a few years ago. Glad to see the increased traffic during this event.

Any spotters going to be at DAB? Let's see some photos!

I'll be here... even though the only interesting thing that's coming is the 752 from DL! Sure hope it has some winglets though!

The show is most likely going to be provided by the biz jets coming in for the races... let's see how it goes!

Thanks for the sched!

Take some good photos! Daytona Beach has a special place in my heart. Just a few years ago I was flying Embry Riddle 172's out of DAB.

My friends and I used to line up on the service road and race the MD80's down the runway in my car...a small but fun airport I will always remember.

Have fun!

That sounds like a lot of fun. I'm sure the MD80s won though.

US is also heavily upping capacity with many 737s to CLT, but no DCA or PHL this time. Considering the snow, that they just had, its probably a good thing though.

I'm probably crazy because its so damn cold but I am going to head up there early to get the biz jets coming in, then get the fighter jets taking off etc because it looks like they will be using Runway 25s today and its clear - two good things... but so damn cold.

What do they have in terms of military jets this year? just the usual F-15s?

I see that US has an A321 scheduled later on today around 5p or so.

Probably, 16/34 is probably closed so the extra planes can park on it.

They had 2 F-15's to open the 500, which is odd because they always use 4 fighters or 1 bomber, never seen just a pair before. And they used runway 7L, I was on Williamson DIRECTLY underneath them as they crossed over to land.

On the airline ramp they had 2 T-38's in dark/light gray camo.

Most impressively they had a single seat F-5 in desert camo. Seeing an F-5 is extremely rare these days, unless you see one of the Aggressor Squadron ones... which this might have been.

I've got a post about it in the MilAv section.

I remember my last year there, CO brought in a 753 which was amazing to see there, and DL even had a 763. That year, the 752 was also a regular part of the DL schedule and of course, airTran still flew there   the good old days

The T-38's and the F-5 did the Flyover for the Saturday afternoon's Nationwide Race.

Those aren't the true good old days of DAB. That was when Eastern, National, Piedmont, Delta, Air Florida, etc made their regular appearances in DAB in the 60s, 70s, and even into the 80s. Granted, I wasn't alive for it but I would still consider that era the good old days of DAB, not 2007-2008.

DL and US have a loaded schedule for tomorrow February 15, 2010.

I was working line service for Daytona Beach Jet Center when Presidential, Continental, Eastern, Delta, Air Florida (I think), USAirways, etc were flying into DAB. BAe 146's, 727, 737, DC-9, etc. were there and they were filming Days of Thunder.... and you still had to walk across the tarmac to airstairs to board your plane.... and that was 1990. They build the terminal the next 2 years and all that went buh bye. Miss the old days. And later we had LTU L-1011's at least one day a week.... on Wednesdays.

And we had a DoD contract so lots of transient military stuff, have pictures of Apaches doing patterns, CH-46's, CG Dauphins, fighters, trainers, all of it. And our airshow was alive and was HUGE with everything in the inventory represented.

Indeed. I just drove by the ramp here in DAB tonight, and its the fullest I've seen it in a while. Delta has a 757 out in the middle of the ramp, not up to a jetway. Its a shame its not like this more often in Daytona.

Something you don't see everyday in the small Daytona Beach International Airport.

The first two DAB-CLT flights were on time or close to it. US has had to use Gates 3 (former CO gate) and 6 (former FL, though US also used 6 back in the 1990s before their pullout) in addition to their own Gate 5.

When I worked there for a brief period of time DL had 4 overnighters every saturday and they once had 5 with the daytona 500 (3x ATL 1x CVG and 1x DFW) DFW was sat/sun only DL was parked at gates 1 2 4 5 6 and CO had their ERJ at 3.

I cant imagine the terminal though with 2x cancelations today though, that counter must be a disaster.

Delta also flew DAB-CLT for the 500 a couple of years in the 2005-06 time frame, IIRC.

What sort of passenger does DAB attract around the 500? My wife goes most years and flies in and out of MCO, where she has run in to quite a cast of characters over the years on early morning MCO-CLT flights (drivers and media, mostly).

DAB-CLT was proposed last year but canned (I believe) when US announced service. There were charters to either CLT or GSO in the past, nothing in the past few years though.

I imagine MCO-CLT was a lot busier prior ro US launching DAB also.

US announced service in 2007 and started in 2008 just before the 2008 Daytona 500, so it was probably a bit over two years ago.

Drunken rednecks from all around the country.

Last year, US ran flights to PHL, DCA, and LGA for the 500.

So DAB gets all the drunken rednecks and MCO gets all the higher-yielding pax? I don't think that's right...

It was a joke.

I think DAB gets the passengers that would rather not make the drive from MCO. Trust me, there are some, or else DL and US would not have thrown in so many flights on bigger planes.

The rednecks drive into town with their RVs. Flying in plus hotel plus race tickets is easily a 4-figure ordeal per person.

Though in 2003 (what I believe was the last year of the charter flights) their Pace 737 was delayed for like 8 hours after a rain shortened race, so the 100 or so people ended up getting plastered and the concourse was TRASHED by 3am. So while they may be drunken rednecks, these people charted a 737, so there is nothing low-yeilding about this weekend for DAB.
