Any idea why? It's a charter flight number but I've heard they sold seats on at least the 9796 leg.

Probably to get people in/out of BOS that have been stranded by the recent snowstorms that hit both the midwest and the east coast.

Can anyone confirm that? Doesn't make much sense to me as NYC and DC got hit much harder by the storm.

Did this flight exist before the last few days? Anyone have any clarity as the real reason?

It went ORD-BOS-ORD as 9795 and 9796. Both charter flight numbers, but with regular passengers on board at least 9796 and perhaps both.

Not sure where it is going once it gets back to ORD

(861 is BOS-IAD, operated by different equipment)

If you look at 97xx lots of extra sections (presumably) trying to clear the back log in the system. Most exciting was a 744 this morning that flew (or was supposed to, haven't checked the extra segment on flightaware) ORD-DEN-IAD.

Not all the passengers were stuck in DC or NYC. The extra sections get passengers that might have been connecting at IAD or even ORD (remember they had big storm on Tuesday too) into the system. With the draw down for the past several days and reduced schedule today as they recovery continues it makes sense to send ONE big airplane in to BOS. Send the smaller gauge airplanes to multiple other stations versus sending 5 A320's to and from BOS.

It was indeed an extra section, and a MUCH needed one. I used several seats on it today at work, as there's no seats out of PWM until next Thursday. Boston wasn't much better.

The extra section went from empty to full in about an hour today. Amazing.

My brother was on that flight yesterday (2/11). I'm pretty jealous.

It appears the 777 that did BOS-ORD continued on to DEN last night and RONed. Where did it go from DEN, and is it a domestic or international configuration?
