They ordered the A343 before the 777 and it was already in service when they ordered the 777. From what I remember. the 777 didn't fit in with Gulf Air's fleet plans and they opted for cockpit commonality with the A343 and ordered the A332 instead of the 777. I think they also started to see a drop in traffic as Emirates got bigger and more successful. This topic has been discussed before and you can look for that with the Search function. I agree, it would have been nice with a 777 in Gulf Air colors. The777Man

Yeah really to bad that Gulf Air didn't want the Boeing 777. For me is the 777 the best airplane in the world. Have flown on Malaysian and American 777-200 and I just love this plane. So spacious. I don't like the Airbus A340 very much, the 777 is much better.

Yeah the 777 is the best. Glad that Singapore Airlines bought more 777. The 777 is so great, especially inside of Malaysian Airlines, you have so much possiblities to do. But also interior of American Airlines 777 looks very nice and so spacious.

That' life! Gulf Air must have had some reasons why they didn't go for the triple seven. I mean if every airline would think they way I have the luck to read here so far I would say byebye Airbus - since Boeing is much better anyways...

C'mon guys, don't be kids....Boeing is this and Boeing is that,....don't be childish.
Don't get me wrong, I like any airliner heaps, weather its Beechcraft, Boeing or Airbus, but I won't go and brag about its spaciousness,...etc, but rather see something special in every aircraft, because quite frankly Airbus has something that is better than what Boeing has to offer and vice versa.
The reason why your comments are inaccurate and wrong is that If the 777 was so good than why is Airbus almost selling as many aircraft as Boeing....?
Also saying how spacious the 777 is, is really wrong as every airline has its own seating config, for instance Thai 777-300 is jam packed to the last inch, regardless what you fellas say, but I am not gonna say that the 777-300 is a bad machine because its so crowded, its the airline I should be looking at and not the airliner.

Why is it whenever people begin comparing an Airbus and a Boeing, it's an A v B war?
Space is not something that varies. It is always constant. A 777 will always be wider than a A340. That is a fact. Another fact is that the coach seats on a 777 are in fact the widest in the sky. They are wider than an A340's, wider than a 747, wider than whatever else is flying today.
I'll be the first to argue that the A320 is more spacious than any 737, and also argue that the 777 has more comfortable seats(width wise) than the A330/340. Of course, that's with all things being equal--they're not.
Fact is, most carriers have choosen one aircraft over the other. Therefore, it is silly to say that one is better than the other based on seperate experiences from two differant airlines' products. Untill you've flown on each of these aircrafts with the same airline, you really can't jump to conclusions.
