Hey,
Do you think that Airbus and/or Boeing will ever make money with the A340-500 for Airbus and the 777-200LR for Boeing? 18 A345 on order are not to many and just 2 777-200LR is even worse... I don't really see any hope for both those planes to sell more then just a few hands full. The only airlines that could use the range would be ANZ and QF but neither of them have any of them on order.

I think the future of the 772LR is bleak for the moment. If the sonic criuser is launched, I think it will be phased out. Then again, some airlines may want the range with a cheaper operating cost than the Sonic Criuser. But to add to that, Boeing may pull a rabbit out of thier hat and get the operating costs close.
I think the A345 may have a slightly better chance of survival due to the ETOPS angle.

I think that the A345 will sell better then the 772LR because it doesn't have the ETOPS restrictions. But there are only a few airlines that will need them, like QF, NZ and maybe a few more.

Both Airbus and Boeing will eventually make money on the their respective plane. They would stop selling them if they knew they won't make money on them.

Well I don't know... The Concorde was built and they for sure didn't make one penny on it. There are many other planes where the manufacturers didn't earn anything. I guess that if Airbus or Boeing would pull back their planes they would only show their weakness so they won't. Maybe they could start making money on them if they sell at least 50 to 100 of them since they are not really new planes but a part of a family.

The success of the A345/346 and B772LR/773ER programs do not rely solely on how well Airbus and Boeing sell the A345 and B772LR, respectively. I think the A346 and B773ER will do well. Airbus would need to sell a lot more than Boeing to recover their investment, because Airbus has invested a lot more with a new wing on the A345/346.

Most of the success of the airliners in question here are going to be dependent on whether or not the Sonic Cruiser is a hit or miss depending on capacity, range, operating costs, etc. And whether or not they make more than one size: widebody and/or narrowbody.
The SC could change the game plan.
