Delta At MIA

I'm flying Delta from MIA for the first time in literally ten years (April 2000, during the Elián González affair, was my last time flying from Concourse H). How much has Concourse H changed? I know it was renovated at some point during this decade, and is now part of the glamorous South terminal, but is it otherwise recognizable as it would have looked in 2000?

Also, are the old signs directing passengers to the TWA ticket counters still visible on the curbside portion outside Concourse G?

The Delta end of the Miami airport has a new huge terminal space and additional concourse many airlines have moved to. Lufthansa, Air France, TACA, SWISS, Avianca, LAN and too many others found a new home. AA is finally finsihing its A-D terminal, 20 years after Eastern closed, so MIA is finally what it wanted to be.

Now - If only MIA could get their customs ops to become somewhat efficient and not take nearly 1.5 to 2.5 hours to clear. Just recently I timed it from MBJ to MIA and it took only a mere 1 hour and 20 minutes so conveniently I missed my AA connection to ATL. I should have know better from previous experience at MIA. Some things stay the same. Next month I will just make it much easier and fly DL from MBJ to ATL and clear in 20 minutes or less!

It will still be a couple years before that terminal has its own customs facilities in place. Until then, the airline still has to rely on Terminal E while its oneworld partners operate clear across the airport...

Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

The concourse itself really hasn't changed much since it was rebuilt during the 1990s. The only thing that has changed has been the addition of the international arrivals facilities between Gates H4 and H6 and Gates H8 and H10, which has necessitated the closing of the third floor. The security checkpoint has been doubled in size, and now connects to the South Terminal shopping mezzanine, which is where the new Delta Sky Club is located.

Last time I was there, yes!

The cave that the E-FIS is outdated and much too small to handle AA's operation at MIA, much less those of the carriers in Concourse F. Things should get better once the new C-FIS opens next year. Until then, it would probably be best to avoid the airport.

The entire North Terminal project will be fully completed within a year and a half, at the most.

I don't know MIA customs to well, but I flew LH FRA-MIA back in 2003 and I found customs very pleasant.

I remember it being unusual to go upstairs for customs. In most airports, you go downstairs. It was light, airy, easy, and quick.

Don't get me started on FLL customs. That is a more recent, horrific expereince. MCO is not great either.

FLL customs is much too small for its growing international passengers numbers.

I also have never had a problem in MIA costums. Afternoon rush with Europe and Caribbean or early morning with Latin American flights coming in.

As for DL at MIA anyone see any expansion possible? They have decent ops at MIA now, I would love to see them start MIA-AMS and MIA-SLC.

BTW

Have you guys seen the redesigned website for MIA?

It's finally decent. The previous one was a joke.

MIA-SLC

I think they probably capture that traffic in the FLL-SLC flight.

I could eventually see MIA-AMS on a 763 considering DL flies EWR-AMS on their own metal and seem to be pretty loyal to the route right now. Pax loads would be good most likely on MIA-AMS at least seasonally. MIA, very similar to EWR would make a ton of cash on cargo to AMS since they are both very significant port cities.

Not sure about MIA-SLC. Maybe 1x daily on a 738 seasonally. Although DL seems to have ramped up JFK-MIA with 5 daily flights right now. Good for them in competing against the big belly gorilla (AA) within the market.

DL seems to focus on their P2P out of FLL. They serve MIA very well with frequency, but DL is not going to expand MIA at the expense of FLL. MIA-AMS would get my vote as new international route in 2010/2011.

No, AF flies to CDG but there is no link to AMS.

Nope, MartinAir used to but it recently stopped. So i would think a MIA-AMS is currently underserved. MartinAir Cargo is still in operation though.

DL seems to focus on their P2P out of FLL.

The little left of it - Boston, Hartford, LaGuardia, Los Angeles and Tallahassee, and soon-to-resume Las Vegas.

MIA-JFK has more service now than FLL-JFK.

When you take into consideration alliance partners, Delta/SkyTeam is much stronger these days at Miami than Fort Lauderdale.

Yes! My sentiments exactly.

MIA-AMS on DL has been rumored for a while, but nothing official's come yet. Martinair ended the route on September 4th, 2009.

Well in that case I could see either DL or KL picking up the route. AA could prob swing it just as well..

AA missed the boat on MIA-MXP. Unfortunately, I think they're content to do the same on MIA-AMS.

AA is not missing any boat on MIA-AMS.

It is a large market, but nearly all vacation traffic with a substantial portion of the traffic originating in the Netherlands.

Milan has a larger component of Miami-originating traffic (although still primarily Milan-originating), good business demand and a strong VFR component, not to mention Milan has a good-sized market to Central/South America, much more so than Amsterdam.

Totally different markets. MIA-MXP can work for AA (even complimenting AZ), MIA-AMS won't.
