ORD And 9L/27R

I have a few questions about how ORD is using its new runway. Now that I no longer live in the Chicago area, I've been watching flightaware to see how the arrival and departure flows work with the current runway configs. Correct me if I'm wrong but when landing to the west it seems that 10 and 27L are used first, then 27R when 3 arrival streams are needed. With lower visibilities I haven't seen those three arrival streams and 27R doesn't have landing traffic. When landing to the east, the three arrival streams tend to take 4R, 10 and 9R as visibility allows. Does 9L handle departures in this configuration? I'm sure I've left out other possible configurations, what would those be? Finally, how does traffic taxi to/from 9L/27R? Is there a route available that does not cross any runways?

Thanks in advance.

In all honesty, I really haven't seen any changes in the past few years.

My parents house is along the approach pathway of 27R..in fact, I see a UA passing the house right now..  ..

Apropos, its been snowing here quite a bit the past few days and I still haven't seen any changes....

That's the most I can help right now....

I go to ORD often. I think one of the biggest changes I've seen is that runway 4L/22R is almost never used now(this is the one whose approach goes over the Allstate arena). Before the new runway went into operation this runway got used quite often. Also, I have never seen the new runway get used for departures but I have seen it get used during extremely thick fog. I guess things have gotten more boring now, at least from a photography perspective. Before, different patterns would get used. Now the airport prefers to use the 3 parallel runways for arrivals and the rest for departures. Not that I blame them as it is efficient but it makes things difficult for us spotters who wish to catch a particular arrival as it could come on any of the three.

That seems to be more true in west flow than in east. They still use some combination of 4R, 10, and 32L for arrivals sometimes.

I have landed several times on 27R and I always groan as we approach the runway and I see we are flying over Target because I know I have a 20-25 minute taxi ahead of me to the gate. The new runway is nice, but the taxi times are so long to the terminal.

Yesterday I saw a couple 777s landing on it, which I do not see very often. Usually, I see everything but heavies landing on it.

There are several posts in the forum archive that detail each of ORD's arrival/departure scenarios. A few of my observations since the new runway opened:

- I've noticed 27R (the new runway) in use for landing quite a bit, but I have never seen arrivals on the opposite end, 9L. I've also never seen anything take off from either end of the new runway.

- 14R-32L seems to be the preferred "late night" arrival runway, regardless of wind direction. I've only landed on 32L twice, and both times were after midnight on delayed flights.

- 32R seems to be used almost exclusively for overseas departures, given the proximity of the threshold to Terminal 5. Departures from the opposite end (14L) happen occasionally, but it's a long taxi to get out there. Arrivals on 14L, which were rare before the new runway opened, are even more rare now.

That's not a new thing; it's been that way for at least five years. I flew into ORD late at night quite a lot in the 2006-2007 time frame (often on the last NW flight from DTW, which IIRC arrived around 2230) and landed on 32L more often than not.

The only time I've landed on 32L was around 9pm, and the weather was windy and raining. I was surprised, since I was on a F100, which doesn't need that much runway to land.

Last month, I departed on 32R for PHX. I was on an AA MD-80, which was at MTOW, because the gate agents were looking for volunteers due to extra fuel needed for reserve. PHX actually closed the day before (1-21-10) due to severe storms in the area. Considering how long we sat on the taxiway before entering and starting takeoff roll, about 10 minutes, my guess is that ATC needed to slot our arrival at PHX, and 32R wasn't busy.

A few months ago, in the evening, as we departed from 32L, I looked down and saw a couple of airplanes lining up for departure on 9L, and found it very strange. So to answer above questions, they do, at least, once in a great while, depart from that runway.
