I was at Narita today and noticed a Delta A330, reg number N818NW, with the right winglet painted blue and the left one painted red. Anyone know the reason for the irregularity?

My guess would be that the left one was damaged and had to be replaced and they either had a former NW winglet that was painted red or they borrowed a winglet from another airline that was painted red.

Sounds like a borrowed winglet from another carrier... Sounds like a normal practice when a aircraft suffers a damaged part and the only source of parts will be a competitor leasing the damaged part until the aircraft returns to home base...

There was a photo some time back of a NW 757 at BDL. The vertical stabilizer was NW red while the rudder was UPS brown!
actually it was discussed here!

Probably this. You'll see this sort of thing often when a carrier is in the process of repainting its fleet. I know that UA has had a lot of nosecones that don't match the rest of the plane - looks a little odd, but other than that it's no big deal.

It was a NW winglet, they have not spent the money to paint the extra winglets they have.

Perhaps Delta's "new" new paint job. Maybe on a trial run. (Yeah, I'm being facetious.)

Maybe the "Red Tail" just doesn't want to go?
