Virgin Blue announced on Friday that it will introduce a new low-cost, low-personal-space economy class at the rear of its planes. Low cost economy will complement its existing products, standard economy and Premium Economy.
Reading this article, I couldn't help but think that the airline industry is using these new products to hit the reset button on their outdated business models. First and Business class seats just aren't selling but there's increased demand for economy seats world-wide.
My reading of this situation is that we'll still have three classes but none of them will be better than what we have now. Sure, ticket prices will be lower to reflect the lower standards but there's only one place for them to go - UP.
Are we facing a future where we're paying 2012 prices for a 1986 product?
