Gateways to Growth

Over the past five years, America West Airlines has been busy with the business of growing. Since 1994, we've expanded by more than 40 percent, one of the fastest growth rates in the airline industry. Most of this expansion has focused on Phoenix, the main hub in America West's route system, where we serve more nonstop destinations with greater frequency than any other carrier. Thanks to the debut this month of a new concourse at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport's Terminal 4, our airline will be able to grow even stronger at Phoenix.

Our new concourse at Sky Harbor will position America West for future growth, providing us with 80,000 square feet of additional space as well as 12 new gates-all critically needed for the further expansion of our Phoenix hub. We began using eight of these gates this month. Four more gates will open in November when taxiway construction is complete.

Also scheduled for next month is the opening of a new America West Club, our airport lounge, conveniently located on the concourse level between new gates A19 and A21. This new club features a distinctive design and customer-friendly amenities such as individual work stations with data ports.

America West and the city of Phoenix worked closely as partners in the construction of the $54 million concourse, adding to Terminal 4's reputation as one of the finest facilities of its kind. Architect Leo A. Daly and contractor Huber Hunt & Nichols designed and built a concourse that's both functional and comfortable.

The new facility complements the terminal's five other concourses while offering wider aisles to minimize congestion and expanded waiting areas with nearly twice as many seats per gate. Gate podiums, which are all equipped with three check-in positions, are strategically located to enhance traffic flow.

As the backbone of our route system, the Phoenix hub is integral to America West's growth. Approximately 80 percent of our expansion of the past two years has focused on Phoenix. Since the end of 1995, we've increased service at Sky Harbor from 174 daily departures to a current total of 219. Significant growth potential still exists, and our goal is to increase daily departures to 300 by the end of next year. (Total does not include America West Express flights.)

As the hometown airline, America West is committed to providing customers at our Phoenix hub with the very best facilities, equipment and service. We are equally dedicated to meeting our customers' needs at every city in our route system. As our airline continues to grow, this commitment will grow right along with it.
