Does anyone have any details about when SJU Terminal A is scheduled to open? I'm due to fly through there twice at the end of April/beginning of May and Terminal B is already boring!

Went over to SJU on Feb 12th and i fly there very often. Unfortunately it seems that the terminal is still not open and it seems that things are pretty quiet although Im sure someone from SJU can add something onto this.

I think SJU LMM Airport still has plenty of unused space and there is no rush to inaugurate the "new Terminal A"...I guess USAirways had already installed a ticket counter there but it is not operating yet. SJU LMM needs to maintain its facilities because like many things related to the government of Puerto Rico are not maintained well. The other SJU LMM terminals need to be maintained and well kept. I was at the jetBlue, Spirit, COPA boarding lounges recently and the areas were dirty, the air-conditioning did not seem to work and it looked tired and messy...SJU will not attract more traffic or remain competitive if it is not under development and constant renovation. The AA terminal is outdated too and many shops are vacant, a pity.

So the former EA exclusive terminal which opened in 1988 is now terminal B?
I remember the opening party...it was great.

It's completely outdated, but pretty functional IMO and easy to fly from/through. A few things to consider as to why they are in no rush to change that:

1-PR economy has been stagnant for the past decade, with huge government deficits as mentioned before.
2-The growth rate of passengers (O/D and connecting) at SJU has not been enough to lead to major capacity constraints.
3-SJU does not face a lot of competition from other airports in the island or the region, including the AA/MQ hub.

I will say that the food concessions at SJU (at least in the AA terminal) are varied and priced reasonably, and I particularly like a couple of the duty free stores for the same reason. The Admirals Club is nothing to ride home about - very 90's and extremely small bathrooms.

I think the "AA terminal" has not been updated due to a contract/dispute between AA and SJU LMM airport authorities (lease). I believe when AA scaled down its operations in SJU over a year ago, a lot of space was freed and nothing has happened. AA does not need the whole building to handle its current operations. The main food concessions at that terminal (AA) were supposed to be remodeled (Casa Caribe to close...good riddance!). A Border's bookstore concession outside of the secured area was also on the works but has not taken place due to the lack of growth and activity. I wonder if anyone knows what is going on... ???????????????????? I would be interesting to finf out. I do know the economy in PR is very stagnant; I doubt there would be any aviation growth in the the next years to come except for the LCC carriers. SJU LMM's growth especially in the INTERNATIONAL arena has diminished instead of growing...even with the addition of some very limited services such as VS B744 and soon Mexicana CLICK, there is not much to talk about. It is a shame...perhaps the privatization of the airport will bring more developments.
