This is quite interesting, have heard a few of the LGW fleet have a letter after the number, any ideas folks?

It is done to reduce call-sign mix up and errors. By giving the callsign an alpha-numeric sequence, the chances of call-sign mistakes is reduced.
Nevertheless it still occures regularly!
Speaking for LH, their long-range callsigns still remain the real/original ones, all other have an alpha-numeric call-sign for ATC purposes.

I feel sorry for all of those flights having to take a knowledge exam just to land.
