VX To Get 2 A320s Leased From Lionhart

I'm kind of surprised that 2 of VX's planes will be A320s, as opposed to A319s. MCO-SFO will be pretty long for a 320 in the winter, won't it? Or does the huge-lengthed runways at MCO make enough of a difference?

I suppose it's also possible that they're just talking about the A320 *family*?

Their fleet is already a mix of 319s and 320s so I would guess they took what they could find.

This begs the question (to me anyway): are these new a/c part of plans already in the works or does this signal some new expansion (new city or connect-the-dots between existing stations) opportunities? IOW, if VX will receive the new planes as early as next month, are these planned for the YYZ-route or do the a/c for that possible route already exist as part of their fleet?

Will we some more of that famous "One of the fastest growing new airlines ever!" nonsense kicking in here now?

This still intrigues me. Two "new" aircraft to be received by VX in perhaps late April or certainly sometime in May and still we hear nothing about anything definite (except the MCO-announcement for an August start-up.)

As expressed in the March 18 VX P R:

Quote:
"Additionally, the airline announces its intent to serve Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) with daily flights from both LAX and SFO as early as June 2010."

That is barely 2 months away now, a trans-border route, and they have not assigned a tentative start date or schedule yet? OTOH, they announced MCO-service 5 months in advance! (Have they never heard of selling flights now and simply tagging them as, "Flights to and from Toronto are subject to government approval"?)

I still wonder if these 2 "new" Lionhart 320s are the ones destined to serve YYZ or are they ADDITIONAL a/c? Can anyone associated with VX shed any light on this situation?

Ah - you have to be really careful about that. Frontier got fined $25,000 by the DOT for doing that on one of the Mexican routes (STL-CUN maybe).

I believe they can do it when they have DOT approval but they are still waiting on Mexico approval.

In the case of Canada, I thought they have to be approved to fly to Canada generally, the approval is not route specific. Once they have that blanket approval, they can announce any route US/Canada.

Or has that changed?

I feel the 319 would be the best bet to start the new YYZ routes when they do announce a date just to get them started and get a feel for the demand and if they will need additional capacity.

MCO from SFO would be better with the 319 on performance alone, from LAX, I'd go with the 319 as well as you have DL, UA, & AA all flying this route. They can always adjust capacity accordingly up and down with the 319/320s.

I imagine they are negotiating on the best deals for leasing, as they also have other planes coming and can adjust currently now.

I've never seen a group of people whine more about marketing slogans as a.net does over Virgin and VX slogans.

Do you really think that Delta Air Lines loves to fly, and it shows? Are the skies really "friendly" on United? Or Air Canada "defies obstacles"?

Just because they are leasing 2 A320 doesn't mean the planes are being used for MCO/YYZ. VX shuffles the fleet around with flights up and down the West Coast being a mix. They will be pulling the 319 from West Coast and sending them to the new destinations. The leased 320 will then take up their place. YYZ though is well in range for a 320 (UA/AC daily). MCO is as well, in fact on United is operating MCO-SFO (flight 37) with a 320 as I write this reply.

Still waiting for goverment approval. Expected very soon. Then it will be listed for sale.

Quoting mariner (Reply 3):

Has not changed, your correct as far as I know!

So now that we've heard that Canada has been approved for VX -- being discussed in another old thread:
Virgin America To Add MCO,YYZ (by ItalianFlyer Mar 18 2010 in Civil Aviation)
-- I will ask again if these 2 "new" a/c are the ones expected to be used for YYZVX's new aircraft availability is for the next few months?

(The edit function is its usual fantastic and useless self and I give up trying to fix post #8.)

My last questions were supposed to be:
> I will ask again if these 2 "new" a/c are the ones expected to used for the new YYZ service?
> Does anyone know the current availability of new a/c for the summer? Are the two 320s being discussed in this thread really unplanned and additional a/c not expected as of a few months ago?

We are going to more of a A320 fleet (yes the 319 has more range) but the cost per set mile is higher on the 319. These two new planes can be used anywhere, not specific to YYZ or MCO.

We will get these in a couple months when they get new interiors down in Florida. We were able to get these sooner than then the brand new, out of the factory orders. We are big on new planes only, but we are expanding and we need these planes right away; keep in mind three additional cities by the end of the year.

Elevated, you seem to be in touch with VX. Thanks for your input. I sure hope PDX will be one of those three...
