As many of you know, Air India dropped there highly profitable route out of BHX in October 2008. The particular route had about 85% LF and was AI's most profitable UK route (except LHR).
The airport is now urging companies to re-establish this link through this petition: http://flyindia.birminghamairport.co.uk/

Quoting RJ111 (Reply 1): Why did AI drop the route if it was highly profitable?
The official Air India line? Slot protection at Heathrow. They said the suspension was to move the aircraft to operate via LHR so as to preserve slots there, and they would look at reinstating the service in the summer season of the next year... obviously it never happened.
I'd love to see one of the 3 airlines in India pick this back up, as I think a terminating flight would do very well, as the Birmingham-India section always did better than Birmingham-Toronto.
But the problem was, I remember seeing it being delayed by almost 26 hours sometimes. It wouldn't be that uncommon to see 2 AI aircraft at BHX because there on-time performance was just so poor.
I would love to see Kingfisher on this route though.
