Why couldnt the A330/340 use the same RR engine design as on the 744 and 767(BA only), why do they get different looking engines, the ones powering the 744 are so beautiful

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone but don't the 767 and 747 use RB211 engines and the Airbus RR Trents. The RR Trent is the next generation of RR engines and has been designed to allow outputs of over 100,000 lbs thrust whilst also reducing noise and fuel consumption. Whilst the RB211 may look beautiful technology and demands from customers move on - the Trent is the future for RR.

Yes, those 767s and 744s are equipped with RB-211 engines, providing around 58 000-60 000 pounds of thrust.
As for the Trent 500 on the new A340-500 and A340-600, it can deliver around 56 000 pounds, and then the Trent 700 on A330s can provide around 72 000 pounds of thrust.
Then, you have the bigger Trent 800 for the 777s. For the A380, I believe that the Trent 900 will be more powerful than the Trent 700, but less than the 800, but then again correct me if I'm wrong.
Anyhow, the Trent family is the newer family of RR engines. The RB 211 has been around since the L-1011, it's a good engine, but the design is getting old, and like LBA said, the Trents are more fuel efficient and also quieter.

Actually, there's a lot of commonality between the RB.211 and the Trent engines.
Remember, the Trent 700 was originally named RB.211-700 before Rolls-Royce decided to apply a different name designation. I believe the engine cores of later RB.211-524 engines and the Trent series of engines have many common parts.

The Trent is just a new generation. There are reasons that airlines don't buy new turbojets, because there are newer and more fuel efficient alternatives.
