How Important Is Gate Utilization For The Cost?

I'm sure this varies greatly, but generally speaking, is it rather loose (say just a simple practical calculation of x potential turns per day per gate, so y flights means you need z gates) or is it more strictly cost based (for example, if 6 flights per gate per day is considered the minimum profitable to warrant a gate, so if you're at 5.2 avg., you suck it up and stick with one fewer gate)?
