Southwest Airlines Announces Service From Norfolk International Airport
DALLAS, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV - news) announced today that it will inaugurate daily service from Norfolk International Airport in October of this year.

``Once we made the decision to serve the Norfolk area, we wanted to inform the community as soon as possible,'' said Herb Kelleher, chairman, president, and CEO of Southwest Airlines.

Southwest will unveil its fares and flight schedules from Norfolk this summer. The airline typically offers fares that are drastically lower than those already offered by other airlines. For example, when Southwest announced service last year from Buffalo Niagara International Airport, the airline offered an unrestricted one-way fare of $65 to Baltimore/Washington, an 83 percent savings from the unrestricted $394 one-way fare offered by other airlines. Southwest's advance purchase fares are even lower.

Southwest Airlines, which brackets the Norfolk area with service from Baltimore/Washington and Raleigh-Durham, also intends to serve the Richmond International Airport. Kelleher stated that Southwest plans to serve Richmond ``at the appropriate time in the future,'' but first needs to complete terminal expansion projects in several cities that would be desirable Richmond destinations but which currently lack the necessary facilities for additional flights.

Southwest will occupy two gates at Norfolk International Airport.

Southwest Airlines, the fourth largest domestic carrier in terms of Customers boarded, currently serves 58 airports in 57 cities in 29 states. Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 2,750 flights a day with a fleet of 353 Boeing 737s with an average age of 8.2 years -- one of the youngest pure jet fleets in the domestic airline industry.

Congratulations to the Norfolk/ Hampton Roads area. The forum called it....in the past few discussion threads on the topic, Norfolk was a top prediction of the Airliners.netheads. Good job gang!

Interesting that Kelleher says Southwest will serve Richmond, an only hour away from Norfolk by car, at "an appropriate point in the future." This suggests that Rochester, an hour and a half from Buffalo by car, has even better chances than had seemed.

Rochester's trends all point towards better chances for WN than Syracuse has. Rochester has a high-tech economy, much higher median income than Syracuse, and a growing population that is over half again the size of metro Syracuse's population. Syracuse has been losing its smokestack industry steadily for the past 20 years, and Central New York's population continues to slide.

In the 1970's and 1980's, ROC and SYR had almost identical traffic figures (except during SYR's Empire/ PIedmont hub period). But in the 1990's, SYR fell behind and now runs consistently about 10 percent fewer pax/ year than ROC on a similar service mix. This suggests to me that ROC is a stronger market with higher profit potential.

This was JetBlue's opinion too. They entered the Rochester market a few months after they took to the skies, despite Rochester's being close to Buffalo, and despite SYR's "better location." JetBlue just arrived at SYR this month, and will probably prosper there as it has at both BUF and ROC.

I would imagine routes from Norfolk to BWI, Chicago or Nashville, several Florida locations and maybe a point in the Northeast like Providence or Hartford.

Well, I bet Norfolk is happy right about now.
I can see why WN would serve Norfolk; however, I would have thought several other cities would have been choosen before Norfolk.

Well, my folks in Dayton will have to continue to pay big bucks to fly.

I thought DAY would have been a more logical choice...heck they have like 4-5 unused gates and a closed concourse--lots of space! Plus, DAY would attract pax from Cincinnati, where DL runs the show.

They mentioned flying to Richmond, which doesn't make a ton of sense considering how close RIC is to Norfolk (like 1.5-2 hrs drive)...I thought is would be one or the other--and Richmond has the population base and could attract people from N. VA.

What are the hopes for WN serving DAY, and how about Washington Dulles (very, very unlikely)?

I know Allentown has been recruting WN as well.

What I think WN should add next:
1. Dayton, OH
2. Allentown, PA
3. Colorado Sps.
4. Charleston, SC
5. Richmond, VA

I bet WN will serve Norfolk to:
BWI
MDW
BNA
MCO
Islip

Not just the Norfolk Naval Base.....but you also have the Army's Ft Eustis & Ft Story. Granted, Patrick Henry is closer to Fort Eustis...but it's difficult to get anywhere from there.

Hey RL757PVD, did you think of this? Some Southwest flights into Islip continue on to Providence. So, if Southwest was smart, they could fly from ORF to ISP, with continuing (one stop-same plane) service to PVD. This way, Southwest picks up passengers wanting to travel ORF-ISP, ORF-PVD, and ISP-PVD. This makes a lot of sense for Southwest, since the flight to PVD from ISP is no more than 35 minutes, one of the shortest routes flown by Southwest. Does anyone know if the ISP-PVD flights are popular and successful?

The Richmond Times-Dispach article mentions the delay for Richmond is due to construction of additional boarding gates at ISP and MDW, two destinations Southwest allegedly wants to serve from Richmond.

The article also mentions that Southwest will eventually serve more destinations from RIC than from ORF.

The Richmond article is interesting. Although Southwest has shown great interest in expanding ISP by adding a terminal with 4 new gates and a parking garage, there are no official plans that I know of yet. Unless I am mistaken, there is no present construction at ISP. ISP is well known for its pushy NIMBYs, who forced a cerfew on all flights (none past 12 midnight). This might be hard for Southwest to expand at ISP, but I sure hope it happens. Southwest has said that they would pay for 90% of all costs. ISP could be a great gateway for the mid-atlantic, providing cheap service to Long Island, and the possibility for connections to the New England-Boston market (PVD). It would make sense for ISP to be one of the cities served by ORF now, or RIC in the future.

It takes a good bit longer up I64 to get from Norfolk to Richmond than 1 hour.

But, ORF is a very appropriate choice. It is the closest airport to Virginia Beach, the largest city in the state. The Hampton Roads area has a population well over 1 million people. Richmond (while further away than DCAROC thinks  Big grin ) is close enough that people will definitely drive to ORF to fly WN. People will also drive up from North Carolina to fly WN out of ORF.

And, can you say hello to OAK-ORF $198? Hells yeah!! Now, I can visit my relatives in Norfolk for cheap. (But, I'll be flying US Airways.  Smile)

PVD-ISP is a winner mostly due to the fact that it used to take 4-5 hours to get to/from those cities. Granted, they are not huge markets, but there are 3 million people living on L.I. Plus, despite the naysayers, people do have a cheap (and quick...flight time is advertised at 25 mins...but will only take 15) way to get to NY now. I hear the biggest loads come on Fridays and Sundays with college students.

According to the DOT there were 130 pax/day going doing PVD-ISP in 3Q 2000.

Which is still part of the Hampton Roads area, of course, but if I remember right it's still another 25 minutes to downtown Norfolk. So I no, I don't drive quite as fast as you think!  Smile Especially if there's traffic backed up in front of the I-64 tunnel.  Smile

Eric, your proposed schedule looks accurate except for STL and BNA, which would probably come a little later.

It will be interesting to see how Southwest's operations at ORF will affect AirTran at PHF. You may see either a price war or AirTran pulling out of the region, like they did in Hartford prior to Southwest starting up service out of there. AirTran may counter with flights to MCO and maybe MDW (by way of PIT), but I have a feeling Newport News may lose AirTran by the end of the year. With AirTran essentially being the only low-fare player in the region, I think Southwest may be too big of a threat, even though AirTran competes with Southwest in only a handful of cities. The comment made by USAir/TWA up in Dayton, what about AirTran, that's the low fare airline that flies there. I know they only fly as far west as Dallas, but you can always fly to MSY to hook up with a Southwest flight to the west coast.

That's a very good point! I had forgotten that the Hampton Roads area already has a low fare carrier in the region. So, are there any other examples in the country where a city was served by two low fare carriers? What happened?

Of course, if they service two distict sets of cities from Norfolk, it probably won't be a problem for either.

Hampton Roads is a weird little region... the Peninsula (home of PHF) and the Southside (ORF) are often seen as two totally different communites. They are served by different newspapers. Until a few years ago, calling one from the other was a long-distance phone call. Richmond is considered a totally different place, totally different set of circumnstances there.

I don't know what the impact of Southwest would be to AirTran, in a whole different airport, arguably serving a different set of customers. They both serve Raleigh-Durham, how does the Tran fare there?
