Am I wrong, or are Finnair and KLM the last major carriers (besides military charters) to use the MD-11 for PAX flights? Despite the aircraft's lack of success, I always liked the look of them. Seems that freight is the only thing left on the horizon for the plane. I wish I could fly on one before it's all said and done with.

Well AY just retired them completely from pax service and KLM plans to keep them until atleast 2012 IIRC... I might be wrong but the last MD-11 in pax service is going to be a KL bird.

The other airlines I can thik of are:
Martinair (I think they are now all-cargo though...)
World Airways; for their IAH-Africa operations.

That's about it I think.

Please use the search function in the forums, there have been some threads recently on this.

MP doesn't use the MD-11 as pax, only cargo.

LH Cargo is also a major MD-11 operator.

If you're referring to the World Airways private charter operation for the oil industry between IAH and Angola, that contract is being switched to Atlas Air in a month or so when the World Airways contract expires. Atlas has acquired 2 ex-Oasis Hong Kong (originally NH) 747-400s for their new passenger charter operations, including the Africa (Sonair) service. Photos below after repainting at HKG. They'd been stored at VCV since Oasis Hong Kong suspended service.

With its 777s and A330s, KL must still see a need for it's MD-11s otherwise they would have retired them years ago....

Not for sure yet. There are rumours M11 could return with AY charter operations. AY owned OH-LGD still waiting at HEL for job to do.

We use them for a whole lot more than just IAH-LAD. On any given day in the deserts of Iraq and Kuwait you can see our birds hauling the greatest fighting force in the world.

I've heard that one of the reasons KL are keeping the M11 for a few years longer is they have very favourable leasing rates.

That is why I see them in HHN every second time I'm there I assume. Side to side with Aeroflot MD11 ( cargo only, An 12, An 124, Evergreen B742 ) - all getting a really interesting view.

Unfortunatelly, KLM also uses the MD-11 to SFO and as I never liked the MD-11's I never fly with KLM
the route AMS-SFO for my business trip ( twice a year )
From Cyprus it is the best connection only 1 hr tranfer time on the way to SFO and 2 hrs on the way back.
I rather use other airlines even stay overnight rather than flight with the MD-11

I did a full post on the ladies of KLM on my blog (http://airceo.com/2010/03/the-ladies-of-klm/) The KL MD11s are going to be around for a while. KLM CEO Peter Hartman has stated that he expects the MD11 to be out of the picture by 2015. Still I would catch a ride on one of these beauties while you can, 5 years will fly by.

I doubt AY will do anything more with their MD11s other than selling them.

What is so bad with the M11 rather than any other aircraft? KL is in the process (don't know if they're done or not) of upgrading their fleet with PTVs in coach

There are currently 3 MD11s in the Finnish register:
-LGB (leased by AY) offered for sale in pax config by Babcock & Brown Aircraft Management
-LGD (owned by AY) offered for sale in pax config (stored in HEL without engines, in white)
-LGG (leased by AY)

ex-LGC (owned by AY) is not in the register, and is offered for sale in freighter config.

All seats on KL MD-11s were replaced a couple of years ago, in conjunction with adding PTVs. The changes included reducing the number of J class seats and changing Y class from the original 2-4-3 configuration to 3-3-3.
