A year or so back it seemed like some headway was being made between the US and VN on allowing more flying. United and Delta (till as of late) were serving SGN. What is the barrier,if any, holding VN from serving the U.S.? Obviously with their fleet it would be 1-stop service to LAX and/or SFO.

VN has had rights SGN-LAX (via KIX on a no local traffic basis) for awhile now.

FWIR, VN originally was have to begun the service in Q1 '08. The combination of economic malaise and a/c procurement served to scuttle that startup period.

Another a.net poster has indicated that Q4 '10 is now the projected timeframe for startup.

As aaway states, VN has been free to serve the US for quite some time now.

I've heard they have also explored service via TPE, but for whatever reason have not actually commenced US flights.

Up early to head to the farmers market with the family.

Anyhow, yes it would be very nice to see VN on these shores. While the route would certainly be popular, I'm not certain however how well its financial performance would be as the market is mostly ethnic with a little tourism thrown in. As most know the US-Vietnam market hardly has a shortage of seats with just about every Pacific player vigorously competing for the traffic.

With 787s on order also, maybe VN is waiting for the smaller plane then commit its larger 777s today.

That was my fear of them starting the service. With Eva to Cathay and everyone in between offering 1-stop at $800 a pop, it will make it hard to maintain that long of a flight with that many seats. Specially if they went with the Japan stop and their weak market as of late. With my wife being vietnamse I know how they shop for the thrifty ticket. Maybe oneday we will have more business traffic. I suppose just another reason to go back to SGN to see those beauty's

From the east coast it's also only a couple of hundred miles further via the Atlantic.

Examples:

JFK-NRT-SGN 8226
JFK-FRA-SGN 8570
JFK-CDG-SGN 8620

JFK-NRT-HAN 7871
