Berlin-Tegel is closed currently.
A 250 kg bomb dating back from the second World War was found in the northern area of the airport during excavation work (this is nothing unusal in Germany ! ).
Parts of the terminal building were evacuated.
As many flights as possible shall be diverted to SXF.

This seems to happen every year or so somewhere in Europe.
Do they do regular metal detecting sweeps in Europe before digging? I'd imagine you'd have to. Some of those bombs can still pack quite a punch if they go off. That was back in the day when things made in the USA were well-made.

Yes, for the wider areas that are known to have received bombs.
In the vicinity of Hannover alone, I think, there were 3 or 4 such actions (but not affecting the airport) this year yet.
Some other cities in Lower Saxony had their share this year already, too, even though only the bigger events (where a couple of thousand people have to leave their homes) make it into regional media ...

It's surely happening far more often that a WWII bomb is found. Only yesterday the rapid transit train service (S-Bahn) here in Berlin was disrupted due to a bomb found on a construction zone. The TXL bomb was found during construction digging near the northern runway and has now been disactived or blown off.
Currently, TXL is open again. All terminals were evacuated at around 6pm. There are now severe delays and some canecellations, obviously.

As a side note, IIRC Berlin was primarily bombed by the RAF. And the bomb found yesterday was a German one with a Soviet made detonator.
