ATA (American Trans Air) L1011's

I wants to know if ATA still flying their tristar L1011...?? Because I saw one flying to DFW today, and it was a Tristar. Why isn't ATA using smaller planes like B757 for domestic routes, and use L1011s for international....?

Current color was seen approaching DFW about 6 miles south.

This L1011 ATA color in this picture is before the current livery.

Oh yes, they are still operating them. I would bet that they are going to hang on to their recently acquired ex-Royal Jordanian Tristar 500s for some time also, so don't expect to see these jumbo trijets disappear for a little while.

90% of their schedules are flown by 727s and 757s, but even while Delta's aircraft will disappear :-( there will be a few domestic Tristar flights for some time! Because the Tristar can't operate from the MDW hub, it's based in Indianapolis. It's often scheduled on flights to Las Vegas or Orlando. Not that these routes are so busy, but it continues to Honolulu and San Juan respectively.

MEA-707 pretty much nailed it when he said most of ATA's sked flights are operated by 727's and 757's and soon 737-800's. The L10's are used on a few domestic routes out of IND (LAS, MCO) as well as to SJU and Hawaii. However they are most often used for charter services. They have about 19 in the fleet now and although they will slowly phase them out, they're still going to keep some around for a while-particularly the latest -500's they recieved. ATA has also had their more recent L10's undergo a thorough re-engining program so they are going to keep them around for at least 7-10 more years.

Their L1011s will remain the workhorse of their charter business. The ones used in scheduled service will be replaced by 757-300s. The 737-800 is their 727 replacement. No idea on what they will get as a longhaul replacement down the road, my guess would be the 767-300/400. They will have to replace the newer L1011s in due time, and will probably stick with something that has the capcity of the Tristar.

I think ATA will keep their L10's for some time, given their major contract with Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays for flights from SFO and LAX to Hawaii. It will be interesting to see if ATA does a long-term lease on the 767-400ER to replace the L10's on this charter run by 2010.

I remember reading someplace that ATA is unlikely to do the 767 thing due to restrictions on cargo -- remember that ATA is a big, very big military charter operator, and cargo capacity is very important to them.

In 10 years, we'll probably start to see the first second-hand market for 777s starting, so maybe they can pick up a few of them. I don't see them going Airbus...

I have my doubts that ATA will buy the 777-200 series on the second-hand market.

If ATA does decide to get the 772 or 772ER for military charters, they'll probably do a long-term lease on new planes through Boeing's own leasing company or through a lease company like GECAS or ILFC.

ATA operates the L1011s on routes for the Department of Defense for Air Mobility Command. Flights depart from BWI to Frankfurt, Naples, Al Kharj AB Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to name a few.
