Does anyone know what looks to be like a white pier extending SW from JFK? Is it a pier?

It seems to be in line with taxiway L and almost looks like there was a former runway there, with the "pier" being landing lights.

Anyone know?

Yep. The original Idlewild airport had 4 runways.

In the link you send, the first set of parallels run along the pier you pointed out and along the parallel section of the present-day "loop around" taxiway to the north.

The second set of parallels ran along that LONG north-south taxiway that goes to the threshold of 31L, and what is now the cargo apron (runs parallel to that taxiway up at the north end of the airport.

Thanks! Interesting that someone from Switzerland knew the answer, but no one from NYC.

Do you know about how long ago the runway was taken out?

Haha. I live 20 miles outside NYC. I have lived here my whole life. I'm Swiss by descent.

I started the same exact thread a while back. Here are some links to threads in the forum. Unfortunately most of the images are inactive now. But there's a lot of information there.

The original three runways at IDL

http://iarchives.nysed.gov/PubImageWeb/viewImageData.jsp?id=139000

but that says 1946, so the airport wasn't even open yet. More runways appeared quickly

Note that the approach lights for runway 7R align with the left edge of the runway, not the centerline.
