With the Wrath of Kristjánsson looking like it's going to last a bit longer, the runways at the big airports aren't doing much. That means no landing fees to those airports and lots of revenue lost. The towers haven't got much to do either.

What about them allowing light aircraft in at bargain basement prices? There wouldn't really be any cost to this. Just put out a NOTAM and something on the website. AOPA will pick up on it and distribute the news. The controllers are already sitting there. Then they could charge something like £20-£30-£40 to give a private pilot the chance to put EGLL or EGKK in their log book. I'd jump at the chance. And it could bring in some small ancillary revenue at no real cost to make up for the zero revenue situation they have at the moment.

The closure is a safety measure. VFR flying is still allowed on own risk - but to create additional VFR traffic for a basket of peanuts none of the stranded passengers would understand.
