Sun Country (SY) Service To STN

While perusing this board, I noticed that Sun Country (SY) has seasonal service to STN. To be honest, this shocked me. Curiosity forces me to ask the following questions:

1. Is their MSP-STN route actually profitable?

2. What kind of service is offered on board?

3. Why is this route offered over a thousand others?

Any insight will be greatly appreciated!

The route starts June 11. $399 one way.

If memory serves, this is to be a weekly flight, but I may be wrong. I'll go out on a limb here and predict that this route won't do very well for SY.

I am torn on this. For three years I commuted from GRB (about 3-4 hours drive time from MSP) to London for classes at Cranfield. During the winter months I could have beaten this fare with flights out of GRB via DTW, MSP or ORD. However, when you think about a summer fare this round trip will be about $750-$1000 less than AA out of ORD and DL out of MSP and DTW.

During those months I woudl dread flying that lane on a 737 with a stop going and coming...but to save $1000 I would likely jump at it.

There was a thread about this when the flights were first announced several weeks ago. It was speculated that the route was to be launched primarily to satisfy a DOD requirement of 1 year of ETOPS experience in order to obtain approval to operate overseas military charters.

Thousands of people are more than willing to sit in a 737 across the oceans and land at 5 locations for refuelling if they can get a dirt cheap air fare. Plain and simple!

I hope SY has the brains to have a decent buy-on-board concept, so that they can pull in some extra revenue. Europeans are now used to BOB and buy quite a lot when flying.
