Sounds like it will be a little too early and a little too late for any good pictures unfortunately. Atleast I still got the one from a few years ago when the Bucks came back from their preseason games in China.

Do you happen to know where it will be parked?

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

The DL 744 will be flown to MKE on a ferry flight from DTW Saturday late afternoon (ETA 1630).
Staying overnight and leaving Sunday early AM to IAD (ETD 0630),
It then returns Sunday night and leaves to go back into the system shortly there after.
I hope this helps.

There's no DL 747 flight from DTW showing up on flightaware, only this 753. Did the flight get downgraded?

When I got to the airport it was back to the game of trying to guess whether to go to the observation lot on Layton Ave (19R landing) or to the top of the parking garage (25L landing). It seems like they usually land the heavies on 19R regardless of the wind, but the wind was whipping out of the west today. Sure enough, I ended up going up in the parking garage only to have it land on 19R...Anyways, I was still able to get some good pics before the batteries in my camera ran out.

Mike if you look real close in your 1st pic I am in the silver car next to the light pole. I was set up over on Pennslyvania by Aramark until you told me it was on final on 19R. I broke a few driving laws to get to that spot on Layton and managed to film about 20 seconds of the aircraft coming in.

If you are up early we depart at 0630. There is pretty much zero chance we will depart on anything but 01/19...

I had no idea such nice views were available from the parking garage. What length lens did you use for those shots?

Cool pics! Glad some of you guys got to witness it. It's been about 30 years since there was a scheduled 747 here in MKE...the used to fly 1x MSP -MKE-JFK back when the large bulk of international travel went through JFK, airlines flew multi-stop feeder flights, and a 50% load factor wasn't uncommon. Some times it even had a DTW stop in there...I think the return went JFK-DTW-MKE-MSP late in the evening. That ended in the late 70's.

I like the symbolism of a 747, but how many WWII vets can readily climb the stairs to the upper deck??

I would imagine it was quite the undertaking getting all these people on board, I was told there were 120 wheelchairs.

Great pictures! It seems as though the fuselage is 'white' for the first third, and 'off-white' for the remaining two-thirds.

Why is that?

The nice thing about the airport parking garage roof is that it's an airport management recognized location for spotting. Between that location and the Layton Ave lot, that's all we have offically. The Airport Park just North of the air field is great too. Plus there is a park just West of the airport under the 7R approach that is ok.

Well it was more like 65 w/c but it did take a bit longer to board 330 guys who's average age is 85 plus.Thats why we got off late.

Ahhh... so that was you, mke717spotter, up on the Parking Structure as well... I found it interesting how the sun came out just at N661US was taxing in.

As information they had to close taxiways Alpha and Romeo because of the debris blown up by the enginers and thus were using 19R for landings after the 747 landed.

As a side note to this Honor Flight, they had to close the MKE parking structure for the return flight it was full. I was told that the terminal was full of family and strangers who wanted to pay their respects to those fine military people and thank them for their services.
I know they are planning another trip in October and I wll make sure I am there for that return flight.

Would this have been the largest passenger flight out of MKE ever?

25 knope2001 : Northwest flew one or two daily 747's at MKE in the 70's (reply #16). Also, at least one winter in the 80's they scheduled a 747 to replace the DC10
26 TVNWZ : It should be mentioned that Charlie Sykes and WTMJ radio put together the flight for these guys. Hats off to them!
