LAN Airlines reported a net income of US$88.3 million for Q1 2010. This represents an increase of 35.8% compared to Q1 2009, fueled by a strong recovery in both the cargo and passenger businesses.

LinK: http://www.lan.com/files/about_us/lanchile/archivos/1q10_results.pdf

"Total revenues for Q1 2010 reached US$1,034.9 million compared to US$882.2 million during Q1 2009 due to a 13.7% increase in passenger revenues and a 35.3% increase in cargo revenues. Passenger and cargo revenues accounted for 72% and 26% of total revenues, respectively, during Q1 2010."

The strong recovery in demand experienced during the first months of 2010 was partially offset by the negative impact on LAN’s operations of the earthquake that struck Chile on February 27, 2010. "Cargo operations were not materially affected by the earthquake, nor were the passenger operations of LAN or its subsidiaries in Perú, Ecuador and Argentina." In March 2010, LAN announced an adjustment in the delivery schedule of ten Boeing 787-8s to be incorporated into the Airline’s long-haul fleet." This new delivery schedule anticipates the arrival of the Dreamliners starting in the first semester of 2011.

LAN Airlines expects passenger ASK growth of approximately 10% to occur during 2010.

During Q1 2010, LAN Airlines received one B767-300ER. For the remainder of 2010, LAN expects to receive a total of eight Airbus A320 family aircraft. Also, "LAN Cargo currently expects approximately 16%-18% growth in cargo capacity for 2010, mainly driven by higher utilization of the freighter fleet, especially the two Boeing 777-200 freighters received in the first half of 2009."

*LAN Argentina recently began operating a daily non-stop service between EZE and LIM. LAN Perú S.A. currently flies between the two cities twice daily.

*On 05/10/10, LAN Argentina will launch three daily flights between Santiago de Chile and Aeroparque Metropolitano Airport in Buenos Aires.

*On 07/01/10, LAN Perú S.A. will launch 4 weekly non-stop flights between Lima and San Francisco, with connections from São Paulo, Santiago de Chile and Buenos Aires.

*On 7/08/10, LAN will add two additional frequencies between Santiago de Chile and Bogotá; thus operating 5 weekly non-stop B763 flights between the two cities.

*On 08/01/10, LAN Perú will increase frequency on the LIM-GRU route to 2x daily.

*On 09/02/10, LAN will launch a thrice weekly service between Santiago de Chile and París, via Madrid.

*On 09/16/10, LAN Ecuador will launch a regular daily service to the Galápagos (GPS), offering a daily flight from Quito and Guayaquil.

Congrats to LAN. Does LAN fly to Central America? Could that possibly be its next growth market? What do you think about LAN acquiring PLUNA- could/ would it ever happen?

With these good results, I think that LA should focus on:

1.- Expanding LAN Argentina operations and market share against AR, both adding domestic markets (they have rights for multiple routes currently not operated) and international markets.
2.- Expanding international operations from LIM, which are right now dominated by TA Perú.

I know they want to launch an affiliate airline in Brazil, but are there any plans for Colombia? It is a saturated market, but a northern hub like BOG would be a great addition to their network, specially to compete better with AV/TA and CM.

Finally, are there any news about the announced service between LIM and IPC?

And don't forget the new cold storage facility, inaugurated a few days ago in Miami Intl., with an investment of about U$4M.

Could be a nice move, PLUNA's main bussines are in Argentina and Brazil ( for obvious geographical reasons ), and could be a good way of probe the brazilian market without risking the LAN brand in case of a bad result... but I don't see that happening in the near future...

And don't forget the new cold storage facility, inaugurated a few days ago in Miami Intl., with an investment of about U$4M.

"This investment doubles the airlines’ capacity to process perishable goods, which are the main export products from Latin America to the United States and to Europe and Asia via Miami International Airport."

LINK: http://www.lan.com/about_us/noticias/20100420_lancargo-en-us.html

The new facility forms part of the over 430,000 square feet that LAN CARGO has at the Miami International Airport including export and import terminals, cold storage facilities, warehouses and offices. Cristián Ureta, CEO of LAN CARGO stated, “The recovery of the global economy has caused a significant increase in cargo traffic because of the larger demand for the air transportation of products and goods throughout the world. Latin America leads this growth, and we have made significant investments to support the development of the import and export activities in the region while offering world class service".

LAN CARGO and its affiliates offer the broadest network of coverage in the region. From the Miami International Airport LAN operates over 115 weekly flights to the principal cities in Central and South America, in addition to destinations in Mexico and Europe. Also, 895 employees work at the LAN Airlines and LAN CARGO facilities located in Miami-Dade County alone!

When I was attending the cargo conference in MIA last year they told that LAN Cargo has about 7 cargo flights coming in in the morning. LAN Cargo is also registered in Florida as far as I know, most if not all of their cargo aircraft are N-registered aircraft, so they are also allowed to operate domestic routes within the U.S. if they would like to. I had a ramp tour at MIA back than and we passed their air side cargo facility. Their operations in/out of MIA indeed is huge.

In Brazil they will be also launching service to BSB from LIM, 4x weekly.

New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Why is that surprising, especially given the fact that LAN operates passenger flights between MIA and BOG, CCS, EZE, GYE/UIO, LIM, PUJ, and SCL? LAN CARGO's facilities at MIA are the largest facilities of any foreign-owned company in the U.S. The MIA distribution center even served as a model for all the company's facilities in Latin America's main airports (SCL, EZE, LIM, GYE, etc.)

IIRC, the service will initially operate 3x weekly beginning on 08/01/10:
LP2772 LIM-BSB (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays)
LP2773 BSB-LIM (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays)

Not operated by them. AR currently operates to all destinations LAN Argentina has been authorized to operate.

Hasn't this been going on for a year or so already? Thing is, that with the May 12th switch to AEP, LIM will be swapped to a 3rd 767 (4M), because of the ferrying of the last A320 remaining at EZE. This will mean that all 10 A320s will be based at AEP.

Saludos,

Did I say it was surprising anywhere in my post?

I sometimes see 4-5 freighters (even the T7Fs) and another 4 pax a/c all at the same time on ground in MIA. I would think LAN is the second largest operator out of MIA (of course after AA)

Answering my own question: from a link in a different thread, looks like AV offers more capacity than LA at MIA, see complete list at: http://www.anna.aero/2010/04/27/miam...us-to-latin-america-and-caribbean/
