Today SAA's A340-600, ZS-SNH, landed at the brand new King Shaka International Airport (ICAO code FALE) serving Durban, South Africa on a demo flight from Johannesburg. It thus became the first airliner to touch down at the airport. The aircraft was carrying members of the press ahead of the airport's official opening on 1 May 2010.

Tomorrow will thus mark the end of commercial flights to the existing airport, Durban International (ICAO code FADN) after 59 years of service. Most equipment and aircraft that usually overnight at Durban will relocate to the new airport during the evening of 30 April and early morning of 1 May 2010.

Great to see they're finished in time for the world cup!

Horrible name though, King Shaka Airport. Just my personal opinion.

I am not so sure that it is a horrible name as such .... but I am waiting for news reports of pax who thought they were buying tickets to the DRC rather than South Africa 'What do you mean this isn't the Congo ? I thought I was buying a ticket to Kinshasa !

Way to be sensitive to another country's culture.

LOL that is a possibility, I have seen reports of such errors with names that aren't as closely similar!

FALE = La Mercy (the area the airport is located in)

Will the new airport lead to new nonstop service to Europe or Asia?

King Shaka was one of the great Zulu leaders - moves have been made about him, like "Shaka Zulu."

Many airports around the world - and especially in the US - have names of local or national leaders who might be less known to people from other countries.

What is the likelihood of the likes of LH or VS starting Durban to Europe service?

I would have thought an SAA 342 to FRA or a VS 343 to LHR could work?

Regards

Mike
