Hello, I just got back from a trip to good ol' Denver, Calaradah, and fancied experiencing United's new interiors. Now this is a true rhapsody in blue.
Here's a teaser:
Notice the attractive blue seat fabrics with subtle stripes and squares of different blue hues.
It's very hard to make out the new carpeting, but its a rich blue with lots of little gray spots, like confetti. The description might make it seem tacky, but it works quite well with the decor.
As for the bulkheads, laminates, etc., United has chosen to standardize on a plain "airliner" beige for these.

That looks almost identical to the new American fabric. Which looks nearly identical to the new Delta fabric. Which bears a striing resemblance to the new Continental fabric.
WHAT HAPPENED to each airline having a personality? WHAT HAPPENED to Braniff's multicolored interior of the 747 Braniff Place era? WHAT happened to interiors like TWA's, with Red, Grey and BLUE seats?
AM I THE ONLY FREAKING PERSON ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH THAT DOESN'T WANT TO BE EXACTLY LIKE EVERYONE ELSE?!?! I am really starting to get scared here.
Yes, I will grant you that the thing does look good, and is in taste with the new millenium style. BUT- it's just like every other friggin' airline seat. That is frustrating. WHY THEN whould I chose United over American? THey have similar service, one is not more attractive than the other, so what's the point?
Why don't we just have one huge megamerger with just ONE government controlled airline with ALL the same seats and the same livery!?!? I have an idea- part AA, like bare metal, and then the deltaflot tail, with the bottom Continental Blue and the top United Grey and then a big TWA stripe down the side??? HOW'S THAT!?!?
I am sorry to make such a big deal out of this, but does anybody hear what I am saying???

Just thought of an intriging question about that pic above...........Why would anyone even take this picture? Needed to waste some film perhaps? Curious....

I think the blue goes well with the aircraft interior. I do like the blue and florescent colours on BAs World Traveller seats.

Thats it? Nothing special. They are almost a little bit of a disapointment. Well, I guess that anything is better than the grey interiors and the greyhound like designs.

The pictures really do not do the decor justice.
First of all, my camera is real crap... I mean, 1 megapixel... pshhhawww!
And while everything else in the cabin is plain (it's a shame they did not put fabric or laminate on the bulkheads or make the tray tables, armrests gray), the fabric is something special.
I've flown on DL's, AA's, and CO's newest interiors (but not NW's), and while these are all shades of blue, none of the fabrics were as "intriguing" (for lack of a better word) as United's.
The interesting thing with the seat fabric is that the squares and stripes have some metallic sheen. They are very hard and subtle to make out while you are walking through the cabin; when you first walk in, it seems it is all just plain blue. However, when certain shades of light strike the fabric, the seats take on a shiny luster, and you can clearly see the squares and stripes. The bright flash of the camera is precisely why these are visible.
Here is a better pic to show this:
As for looking like Reno Air's seats, there is some resemblance-- but Reno's fabric wasn't as contemporary, and simply more plain.
I dunno, you may find the seat fabrics completely unremarkable and my interest in them boring, but I certainly appreciate the way materials contribute to the environments around us, especially in aircraft cabins.

I agree that the seats are part of an airline's personality. In the days of colorful interiors, I could look at a picture of the seats and immediately tell if it was Eastern, Delta, United, etc. Now they all look pretty much the same. I like the US Airways interior. Even though it is mostly gray, it can easily be distinguished from the others. Colorful interiors were acceptable to the public for many years. Who decided that they are no longer acceptable?

Are you sure this is a new interior? I think this is the OLD "new" interior that was test marketed last year on a few aircraft, most notably the new two class 777's and it didn't go over well and has subsequently been dropped...

I agree as well -- although there are times, especially when I'm tired, that I could care less (except when I am on Southwest, and wretch at the horrible color scheme). My friends joke that Stephen Wolf's wife must like modern art a lot - why else would he do blue and gray liveries at both USAirways and United? Anyway, the reality is that the airline business is matured, for better or worse, and for most people they're just buses in the sky.

No. The old "new" interior was Decor 5, which featured new bulkheads and plastic laminates. It was tested on at least 1 A320 and 1 767-300 (got this directly from a UA F/A).
Decor 5 featured lots of "Earth Tones", which included lots of Green, and even smidgeons of brown!
Instead, United rolled out a new, more conservative "I'm Blue Dabadee" interior starting with domestic 777-222 ETOPS deliveries.
Oh, and one more thing: the new F class seat fabrics are wonderful! They feature the same soothing blue color, but with a plaid/gingham/cross-stripe pattern.

The one that did not go over well was Decor 5, which is what the F/A told me. While knowledgable, they aren't necessarily the most reliable sources, so take that for what you will.

You'll also notice this is the interior featured in the media-blitzed commercial that ran after last summer, featuring good ol' dumbass Jimmy Goodwin giving a false apology.

Hello Everybody,
I'm glad that all of you enjoy our new interiors. These new designs will make it so you no longer need anti-depressents to fly on United. Right now we are implementing this fleet wide, with the ultimant goal of standardzing on an utterly mediocre interior.

"Passenger" and "Imkeww"--
You are both correct! The Decor 5 design and the designs pictured in the first posting are both "old new" designs. Decor 5 featured the same Economy seat colors in the pictures in this post, but also featured light gray/brown carpeting that showed stains after its first flight. The design in this posting's photo shows the modified Decor 5 interior that is found only a select few B777XA aircraft.
BOTH designs have since been dropped. Take it from me: King of all United Geekdom! I really hated the Decor 5 green/blue/tan designs, so I tracked down the manager of the interior redesign project at United's HQ, Tom Nelson. He explained that the redesigns received very unfavorable reviews from both employees and customers, so the redesign team returned to the drawing board and came up with a "NEW new" design that is currently featured on only ONE United aircraft: Airbus A320 nose #4619, which I saw recently in SFO.
The carpeting is dark blue with gray and tan "flecks," the First seats are navy blue with a dark gray checkerboard design, the Economy Plus seats are gark gray with a small "UNITED" logo patch in the center of the headrest, and the Economy seats are bright blue, with the same logo patch on the headrest. The bulkheads are no longer simply beige plastic: they feature a navy blue bottom half and a shiny gray metallic design on the top half. Overall, the design is somber and conservative.. except for the bright blue in Economy.
The renovation was put on hold after the single A320 redesign when United started to cut the budget. No additional aircraft redos are planned at this time... at least not until United stops its fiscal blood-letting.
